A Definitive Ranking of Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares

Christmas always sparks a craving for Ghirardelli. I ate a lot of peppermint bark. This year has been different. It's almost the end of January, and I'm still reaching for another iconic chocolate square.

To satisfy my appetite, I decided to try every Ghirardelli Square I could find at my local stores. Ahead, discover my definitive ranking of all the flavors I purchased.

8. White Chocolate Caramel

Disclaimer: I'm not a big fan of white chocolate. It's usually too sweet for my taste, so I had low expectations while trying Ghirardelli's White Chocolate Caramel. To no surprise, I could not handle it. The caramel made it even sweeter. If you like white chocolate and sweet foods, you'll probably devour it with no problem. But for me, I'll never eat another one!

7. Milk Chocolate Caramel

I do, however, enjoy milk chocolate and usually, I like caramel, too. It's safe to say I was excited to try the Milk Chocolate Caramel. Honestly, it fell flat to me. It wasn't as sweet as the white chocolate version, but it still was above my threshold.

6. Intense 92% Cacao Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is hit or miss for me. I tried Ghirardelli's most intense dark cacao, and the bitterness smacked me in the face! Even so, I still felt myself craving another one. I'm curious to try their lower percentages to see how they taste.

5. White Chocolate Sugar Cookie

Now, here's where things get good. As I previously mentioned, I avoid white chocolate. Something about the White Chocolate Sugar Cookie Square kept calling my name—probably because I love confetti sweets. The white chocolate wasn't as strong here, which made it much more enjoyable. I also love the crunch of cookie chunks and sprinkles.

4. Dark Chocolate Raspberry

I would have never predicted Dark Chocolate Raspberry would rank this high on my list. I don't ever eat fruity desserts, but the Dark Chocolate Raspberry Squares impressed me. The filling was the perfect consistency—not too thick or thin—and the dark chocolate complemented it well because it wasn't sickeningly sweet like milk or white chocolate.

3. Milk Chocolate Peppermint Bark

Oh, I love peppermint. Christmas is my favorite time of year because I crave everything candy cane-flavored. The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Bark paired nicely together. The milk chocolate made it creamy, and the peppermint was refreshing. It was just a tad bit too sweet for my liking—the chocolate taste seemed to linger. Even so, I'd happily eat it again.

2. Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel

The Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel was the best of all their chocolate caramel combinations. Because the caramel is so sweet, the slight bitterness of the dark chocolate turns it down. Plus, the sea salt caramel gives it a tartness, which I love!

1. Dark Chocolate Peppermint Bark

Well, I already loved the Milk Chocolate Peppermint. The Dark Chocolate Peppermint was the solution to my sweetness level issue. It has virtually zero dark chocolate flavor—so anyone would enjoy it, even if you like milk or white.
