A Definitive Ranking of Typical Breakfast Food Items

Over the years, I've learned to love breakfast. It's really the only other "acceptable" time to eat sweet foods outside of dessert, and—it took me years to learn this—the savory options can be just as tasty and fulfilling as lunch and dinner items. With that said, there are still a few dishes on the menu I'm not the biggest fan of.

Whether you always skip your morning meal or consider it an imperative part of your day, you also probably have some strong opinions on a few breakfast meals—especially in the waffle, pancake and french toast debate. Ahead, discover my definitive ranking of breakfast foods and see if our opinions match.

9. Eggs

Plain eggs, for me, are usually an absolute no. Scrambled, sunny-side-up, anything—you name it. There's something about that unique, almost metallic flavor that I can't stand. Every now and then, I'll get a craving for eggs, but I can't finish the dish.

However, there is one egg recipe that I live by: Gordon Ramsay's. Look it up, and you'll thank me later.

8. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is just okay. I love it when I get a good flavor, like brown sugar. I'm probably in the minority when I say this, but I love mush foods, so oatmeal is right up my alley. But most days, it's kind of bland, and it just feels sad.

7. French Toast

French toast is a huge hit or miss for me. If it's made right, it can be absolutely delicious. Sweety, slightly crispy. And that syrup drizzle completes it. But, when it's bad, it's terrible. I despise that undercooked egg flavor and flaccid texture. No thanks.

6. Cereal

Cereal is my go-to meal if I want something quick. Because America packs our cereal with sugar, it has a lot of flavor and is a great pick-me-up for the day. However, I don't find cereal fulfilling most days, physically or mentally. It's still delicious, though!

5. Pancakes

I like pancakes—even more so when I have an entire stack of them. It's also the only breakfast food that I feel is genuinely savory and sweet because I'm not a fan without heaps of butter and syrup. Unfortunately, pancakes are only good for the first few bites. After the syrup absorbs, it's soggy in the worst way.

4. Hash Browns

Like pancakes, hash browns are items that need a lot of seasoning. They're not terrible without it (unlike pancakes), but it's so much better when I douse it in salt and pepper. In my experience, hash browns have also been versatile because they pair well with many sauces and toppings.

3. Omelet

An omelet is one of those items I rarely order. As I said before, I get turned off by the flavor of eggs. But whenever I do get them, they're very appetizing. Since omelets have so many toppings cooked into them, they mask all the bad parts of the egg.

2. Bacon

Bacon is another dish I don't gravitate toward during day-to-day, but whenever I have breakfast, it's a must. Most of the time, I'm taking advantage of having a sweet entree, and bacon balances my palate because of how salty and savory it is. Even when I want something all-around sweet, bacon tastes just as good with syrup drizzled over it.

1. Waffles

Waffle wins every time for me. I love the crispy shell and soft inside of a waffle—whenever I put toppings on them, they never go soggy. And unlike pancakes, I think waffles are still good without the toppings because of their delectable texture.

Because you almost always have to use a waffle maker, it's nearly impossible to botch. So, every time I go to a restaurant for the first time, I get waffles, and they have never failed me.
