Alex Sampson Puts a Chapter of Blinding Love Behind Him With His Debut EP, Blurry Vision

We've been megafans of Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Sampson since he first stumbled across his TikTok 2020, and we couldn't be more excited that he just released his highly anticipated debut EP, Blurry Vision.

Spanning three years of songwriting, Blurry Vision includes six tracks about love, loss and learning to move forward. It spans emotional pop to pulse-pounding rock and everything in between, with each song anchored by Alex's soaring and anthemic vocals, and a story that's had us enthralled from beginning to end. We had the opportunity to catch up with Alex to learn all about the EP and what this debut means to him, and he shared it all with us in the interview below.

Sweety High: What does the EP name Blurry Vision mean to you? Why did that line from "BLIND" feel like the perfect summation of this group of songs?

Alex Sampson: Blurry Vision as the EP title for me represents a love that's so back and forth—blurry—but so painfully beautiful that you can't help but want to stay. The line from "BLIND," "You love with blurry vision," I think perfectly represents the story the songs on the EP tell. It's a story about someone who wants you one day and leaves you wondering the next.

SH: What do you feel are the overarching themes of the EP? What kind of feel do you hope fans take away from it?

AS: The overarching themes on Blurry Vision are falling in love, heartbreak and moving on. The feeling I hope people take away the most is that they aren't alone and that everybody goes through these things. Everybody's scenario may be different, but falling in love, getting your heart broken and moving on share many forms and everybody does it in their own way.

SH: How would you describe the EP's sound? Production-wise, how did you go about bringing these tracks to life?

AS: There are a few different sounds on Blurry Vision, but what really brings them all together is the way I write my lyrics and the certain production elements we put in them to make them all feel like me. The sound on Blurry Vision is edgy pop with a little bit of rock, lol. I think what really brings these tracks to life is the story that each of them tells. The six songs on Blurry Vision span over three years, and as good as each of the songs are separately, they really come to life when put together on the project.

SH: How do you feel that these songs represent where you all are in life right now?

AS: I feel like these tracks represent a period of my life that I'm ready to close. I went through a lot creating Blurry Vision, and I think in a way, once it comes out, I can finally move on completely.

SH: What's your favorite song on the EP? Why?

AS: My favorite song on Blurry Vision has to be "WANT YOU!" or "The Girl Who Cried Love." If I had to listen to one for the rest of my life, it would definitely be "WANT YOU!" because of the insane fun replay value it has. These two songs are completely different vibe-wise, but tell the same story, and that is why they are my favorite.

SH: Was there anything that surprised you about the process of recording and producing your debut EP?

AS: Something that surprised me about creating my first EP was how easy it was to choose songs for the project. I have over one hundred unreleased songs. I was expecting the song selection process to be the hardest decision ever, but everybody on the team kind of came together and we chose the tracks relatively quickly.
