9 Pop Culture Dragons To Love On Appreciate A Dragon Day!

January 16 is Appreciate A Dragon Day! If somehow a favorite dragon doesn't immediately come to mind, we've compiled a short list of 9 of our favorite dragons from pop culture for you to appreciate today!

1. Toothless from How To Train your Dragon

At the outset of the How To Train Your Dragon films, dragons are feared creatures believed to be pure evil. Then a boy named Hiccup meets Toothless, an adorable Night Fury dragon with retractable teeth, who teaches everyone that dragons can be the good guys!

2. Charizard from the Pokémon series

Charizard is a fire-breathing master of battle who's nearly as famous as the Pokémon mascot, Pikachu. In the TV series, the trainer Ash struggles to keep control of Charizard, but in the game he's a reliable partner! Despire Charizard's appearance, he's not a Dragon-type Pokémon. He's actually Fire and Flying!

3. Mushu from Mulan

Voiced be Eddie Murphy, Mushu is a tiny dragon with a massive personality! Though initially he comes to guide Mulan because of a mistake, he manages to help Mulan reach her full potential as a powerful warrior who saves all of China!

4. Yoshi from the Mario series

Mario's dragon sidekick Yoshi has helped him survive various scrapes since he was just a baby. Yoshi can eat your enemies and lays eggs he can shoot back at baddies. We also wish Yoshi was real because he comes in various shades and hues. Talk about color coordination!

5. Spyro from Spyro the Dragon 

Spyro is small, but he's mighty! The little purple dragon is young and ambitious, and when all of the larger, older dragons from his kingdom are kidnapped, Spyro steps up to the task to go on an adventure to rescue them all!

6. Dragon from Shrek

Shrek and Donkey rescue Princess Fiona from a castle guarded by Dragon in the first film, only to discover that the vicious reptile is actually a female with a crush on Donkey! As the films progress, Donkey and Dragon even fall in love with one another and have adorable dragon-donkey hybrid babies!

7. Trogdor the Burninator from Homestar Runner 

First he was a man. Then he was a dragon man. Then he was just a dragon but he was still TROGDOR. Trogdor is a dragon designed by Strong Bad from the hilarious Homestar Runner series. His body is shaped like an S and he has one human-like muscular arm growing from the back of his neck.

8. Haku from Spirited Away

When a young girl named Chihiro finds herself separated from her parents and transported to a mystical but frightening world, she befriends a boy named Haku who helps her survive in the strange land. Soon, Chihiro discovers that Haku is actually a river spirit who can swap forms between boy and a silver river dragon!

9. Norbert from the Harry Potter series

Norbert is a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon raised by Hagrid in his hut from an egg. Norbert grows quickly and soon becomes too much to handle. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Ron's older brother Charlie discovers that Norbert has actually been a female all along, and the dragon is renamed Norberta!
