How Asher Angel Dove Deeper Into His Creative Artistry With New Pop-R&B Single ‘Flip the Switch’
2024 is primed to be a very big year for actor and singer-songwriter Asher Angel.
The 21-year-old star, perhaps best known for his work in the Shazam! films, has the new movie Lazareth on the way, is set to star alongside Mckenna Grace in the teen romance 99 Days and just released his first single of 2024, "Flip the Switch," marking a new era in his musical evolution. He's returning to the world of music with a more mature pop-R&B sound, and "Flip the Switch" is infectiously catchy, with an authentic swagger that perfectly conveys its message about embracing your own confidence and letting the negativity bounce off of you. When we heard it, we knew we had to catch up with Asher, and he was kind enough to tell us all about "Flip the Switch" in the interview below.
The Story Behind 'Flip the Switch'
Asher Angel: "Flip The Switch" is about being confident and comfortable in your own skin. Speaking from my own personal experience, social media can be a very negative place. There's a lot of hatred in the world and there will always be people who doubt you, and that can really affect your mental health. But, I finally decided to "flip the switch" on my mindset to focus on positivity and the importance of unapologetically being yourself. That's the message that I want to share with this song!

Asher's Favorite Lyric
AA: My favorite lyric from "Flip The Switch" is, "Fly her out to London just to have a little fun." It gives me early Justin Timberlake vibes. It's cool and fly!

On His Sound and Style
AA: I would describe my musical style as a blend of R&B and pop. It's somewhere in the middle of both. I also like to keep it real and focus on the genuine storytelling aspect as well. I want to create songs that resonate and connect with my listeners and also allow my listeners a space to escape from reality.

On Moving Into 2024
AA: These last two years, I've really taken the time to deep-dive into my creative artistry and create songs that resonate with me. I feel like I'm at a point where I'm really making the kind of music I've always dreamed of making. "Flip The Switch" is the perfect introduction to my new era of music releases because it's true to who I am as a person and artist.

What's Next
AA: I have a lot of projects on the way in 2024—both acting and music projects. This is going to be a very exciting year! I'm so thankful for the support system I have. I would not be where I am without the support I have from my fans and supporters on social media, around the world, and at home. I want to mention a quote that I live by: "Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard." I think it's important to remember you can pursue any career path with hard work, sacrifice and perseverance.
