Curious About Nickelodeon’s Erin & Aaron? Stars Ava Ro and Jensen Gering Spill the Details
Nickelodeon's newest live-action show, Erin & Aaron, has its series premiere tomorrow, April 20, and it has all of the makings of a hit.
The music-driven comedy stars 15-year-old Ava Ro and 14-year-old Jensen Gering as the titular Erin and Aaron, respectively. Both similarly named teens' lives get a little more complicated when her dad and his mom get married, bringing the stepsiblings under one roof for the very first time. Besides their shared name and the fact they both play music, they're polar opposites—and if they're going to bring the families together, they're going to have to learn how to play nice. Ahead of the premiere, we got the chance to hop on a Zoom call with both Ava and Jensen to get to find out all about them and their new show. Read the full interview below for all the details.
Sweety High: How did each of you find your calling in acting?
Ava Ro: I always knew that I wanted to act when I was older, so I got an agent—I found her from dance class—and sent her a few auditions of me dancing and singing and acting. And here I am! It's my favorite thing to do.
Jensen Gering: Both my parents act, which really inspired me to act as well. I guess it was kind of bound to happen, and I'm really glad I did.

SH: Tell us about your new show, Erin & Aaron.
AR: Erin & Aaron is a musically driven comedy about two stepsiblings who are both named Erin/Aaron, obviously. It's about them finding their way through this new family, bonding through music and finding common ground with each other.
SH: Are you both musical people in real life?
JG: Yeah, I love music—and she does as well. The crazy thing for me is I had to learn a new instrument for the show, which was really cool. I play guitar in real life, but I had to learn piano. And she mainly plays piano in real life.
AR: And I had to learn how to play guitar! We actually learned a lot from each other, really. We helped each other out. And I've always loved music, so this is basically my dream role of being able to put my love of music into a show. It's so much fun.
SH: Do both of you have siblings in real life? How have your real-life interactions with them helped with the show?
AR: Yeah, I have a sister who's younger than me, named Lily. We can butt heads sometimes. We argue quite a bit, but we both love each other. It's similar with Erin and Aaron. They both butt heads, but they find love through music.
JG: I have a brother as well. His name is Dylan, and he's so great. When we were younger, we used to argue a lot, which kind of helped some part in the relationship between us on the show. The characters do argue sometimes, but underneath, they still care for each other.

SH: The show is called Erin & Aaron, so we're guessing all kinds of confusion ensues due to the characters' similar names. Was this ever confusing on the set as well?
AR: Sometimes! It depends. There have been directors who've said, "Erin/Aaron, go do this!" And we're like, which one?
JG: Just say our real name!
AR: And that happens throughout the show as well—but you have to stay tuned to see that.
SH: How similar are you to your characters in the show?
JG: I'm pretty similar to Aaron. We both share a passion for music, and we're both also trying to make it in the industry, which I really relate to. But there are some things that are pretty different. My character is kind of a germaphobe and is very organized. I hate to like throw myself out like that, but I'm not the most organized person.
AR: I think I'm pretty similar to my character as well. We're both confident, we both love writing our own music and playing our own instruments. I think she's a little cooler than I am in real life. She's also a rock star, and I'm more of a pop singer so that really helps me showcase my acting.
SH: The show also stars Larisa Oleynik, who's basically Nickelodeon royalty. Had either of you seen The Secret World of Alex Mack before joining the show?
AR: I've never watched The Secret World Alex Mack, but I did know her from 10 Things I Hate About You, so when I found out that I was going to be working with her, I was so excited. She is such a great role model. She's super funny, and so nice and I love her a lot.
JG: I feel the same way. It's really great to have people who have experience on set that can teach you a lot of different things, from the acting to how to do interviews and stuff like that.
AR: She gives us a lot of great advice.

SH: Speaking of the set, do you have any favorite on-set moments so far?
AR: So here's a funny story. It was one of the first scenes that I filmed, so I was already pretty nervous. I was like, "I want to make sure I do good!" But I was playing my guitar and I accidentally knocked over one of the lamps on the set, and it just smashed all over the floor. I tried to keep going in the scene, but it just didn't work out. It was so embarrassing. I was so embarrassed.
JG: One of my favorite moments—and I feel mean saying it—but I really like scaring people. It's pretty mean, but I do. Ava was on her way to craft one time, and I decided to run up on her and scare her. I scared her so bad she fell to her knees, like she was traumatized. She just stood there for, like…
AR: A solid minute.
JG: A solid minute. Made her rethink her whole life.
AG: Another embarrassing moment for me! I'll have to come up with an embarrassing moment I can talk about for him.
SH: Is there anything you're most excited for fans to see when the show debuts this month?
AR: I'm really excited for people to see the first performance of the whole entire show. It's super fun, and I loved doing it. We got to perform on stage, and it's the first time that you get to see Erin and Aaron sing together.
JG: I'm excited for fans to see not only the music but the stunts, which I think are a really cool component of the show. There are a lot of stunts, especially in the first episode. This is actually my first show ever, so coming in and seeing that the first week was a "wow" moment for me. Like, this is intense. We've got tons of stuff happening, I can't really say much yet, but some really crazy stuff happens.
