Bailey Spinn on Her New Chapter, TikTok Fame and Debut Single, ‘Romance Is Dead’

Bailey Spinn has cemented herself as a bona fide social media star. She's made a name for herself as "The POV Girl" on TikTok in addition to impressing her audience with stunning cover songs, and her foray into original music is something truly special.

Her debut single is called "Romance Is Dead," and it's a fiery, Hayley Williams-inspired pop-punk anthem about the stark contrast between our fairytale visions of relationships and the often disappointing reality of them. It's a perfect showcase of her unique voice, with a chorus destined to be TikTok's next big sound. And since Bailey has  14 million followers on  TikTok, we know we're not the only ones in love. We're thrilled for this next big chapter in Bailey's career—and her debut EP coming later this year—and we got the chance to catch up with Bailey to learn all about what's next.

Sweety High: After making quite a name for yourself on TikTok, why did now feel like the time to share your own original music with the world for the first time?

Bailey Spinn: I've always had a passion for music, even though it was behind the scenes. It took me quite a while to gain the confidence to sing and to make music. I've always struggled to fully express myself because of my anxiety, and music is one of the only things that helps me to do so. I fell in love with my first single, and I want the rest of the world to hear it. I have a story to tell about my life and experiences, knowing someone out there feels the same way. I'm ready to put myself out there and find the people that relate to my music and story.

SH: What is the story behind "Romance Is Dead"? What inspired you to write it?

BS: "Romance Is Dead" came from a place of frustration for me. I have gone a long time without going on a date, and I've never gotten flowers from anyone. My favorite genre of movie is romance, and I always imagine what it would be like to have a love so fulfilling. Looking at dating today, it is nothing compared to romance movies or how dating used to be. Many people aren't serious about dating and act as if people are disposable. I stopped dating entirely because of it, waiting for someone to come my way that really liked me as a person. While we wrote it, I kept listing things I wished would happen for me but never have. The song is my way of explaining how 21st-century romance is nothing how it should be.

SH: Why did the track feel perfect as your first-ever single? How do you feel it demonstrates your artistry as a musician?

BS: It felt perfect because it hit so close to home for me. I had never related to something so much. Being able to express myself that clearly was something I had never experienced. "Romance Is Dead" is the type of song you scream with your friends in the car, which is exactly what I was looking for. Not only does the song depict a lot of my vocal range, but it's also very close to my heart. I found my ability to really connect with the music I'm making while venturing into my genre. The song is a great representation of what's to come!

SH: What does the song mean to you, and what do you hope it will mean to your listeners?

BS: The song truly inspired me to not settle for less than I deserve. It represents taking back the power and acknowledging what you deserve. I hope I'm able to inspire confidence into my listeners, getting them to take their power back too. Even if just a few people can relate to the song, it would mean the world to me.

SH: What's your favorite lyric from the song? Why?

BS: My favorite lyric is, "I'm so sick, of putting effort in on scumbags who don't give a s***." This is exactly how I feel about dating nowadays. I refuse to put energy into someone who isn't returning it to me. I want to feel appreciated and respected by the people I'm talking to!

SH: How does "Romance Is Dead" fit into the larger story of your upcoming EP? Is there anything else you can tease about your upcoming music?

BS: My EP focuses on the cons I've encountered during my adolescence, like self-confidence, mental health and relationships. "Romance Is Dead" represents me realizing why things weren't going my way. It was an epiphany moment for me! If you're into mgk, Avril Lavigne and other similar artists, you're going to love my music!

SH: Who are your biggest musical influences?

BS: I am always inspired by Paramore! Hayley Williams is one of my favorite singers, I'm in love with the power behind her voice. I also love Blackbear, Avril Lavigne and Maggie Lindemann.

SH: Anything else exciting coming up?

BS: Alongside my EP, I've been working on creating a new piece of merchandise for my fans and friends. I can't say too much yet, but I'm excited for everyone to see it!

SH: Is there anything else we should know?

BS: I hope to bring back some early 2000s nostalgia with my music!
