These Are Our Top 10 Movies of 2016

This year has been a good one for cinema-lovers, to say the least.

Although there have been quite a few stellar film releases, we've rounded up 10 of our personal faves that we think deserve exceptional love and recognition.

Zootopia

Release date: March 4

What it's about: A bunny cop named Judy Hopps and a con artist fox named Nick Wilde team up to uncover the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of several Zootopia residents.

What makes it the best: This movie is straight-up inspirational, with the overall message being that you can overcome any obstacle and reach any dream with the right attitude and perseverance. See this movie now if you haven't! Pro tip: It's on Netflix.

 

The Jungle Book

Release date: April 4

What it's about: This live-action CGI film follows the story of Mowgli—an orphaned boy guided by his animal friends Bagheera and Baloo—who goes on a journey of self-discovery all while avoiding the evil threats from the tiger Shere Khan.

What makes it the best: The visuals in this movie are insane. You will feel like the animals are real—it's that good. Oh, and it's a remake of a classic film, duh.

 

Captain America: Civil War

Release date: May 6

What it's about: In this sequel to 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, and 2014's Captain America's Winter Soldier, there's disagreement over the international carelessness of the Avengers which divides them into opposing groups—one is led by Steve Rogers, and the other is led by Tony Stark.

What makes it the best: There are superheroes galore. Seriously, this film has all of our favorite Marvel characters in one place.

 

Finding Dory

Release date: June 17

What it's about: In this long-awaited follow-up to Disney's Finding Dory, the cute but forgetful Dory goes on a search for her long-lost parents.

What makes it the best: This film definitely lived up to all the hype surrounding it. It was heartfelt, funny and beyond entertaining. And will you please take a second to swoon over adorable baby Dory?!

 

The BFG

Release date: July 1

What it's about: An orphan girl named Sophie befriends a friendly giant nicknamed "The Big Friend Giant" or "BFG" for short. The BFG takes Sophie with him to Giant Country where they work together to try and stop man-eating giants from taking over the world.

What makes it the best: This is a childhood dream come true for many, as this movie is based on the 1982 novel by Roald Dahl and fully lives up to the book. This movie is nothing short of charming.

 

Pete's Dragon

Release date: Aug. 12

What it's about: This is the moving story of an orphaned feral boy named Pete who begins an unlikely friendship with a dragon named Elliot.

What makes it the best: Yet again another remake! This version of the 1966 musical film makes our hearts happy and will be sure to make you smile. It is definitive proof that friends can conquer anything together.

 

Queen of Katwe "Queen of Katwe" movie still

Release date: Sept. 23

What it's about: A Ugandan girl's life changes for the better after she discovers the game of chess.

What makes it the best: We adore inspiring films, especially when they are based on real-life events. This particular movie is based on the story of Phiona Mutesi, a Ugandan girl from the slums who defeated all odds to become one of the first titled female chess players in Ugandan chess history. We're thinking this just might be the best feel-good movie this year.

 

Trolls

Release date: Nov. 4

What it's about: This animated musical centers around two trolls, Poppy and Branch, on a mission to save their village from the troll-eating Bergens.

What makes it the best: This movie is star-studded. Our fave actresses and actors including Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, James Corden and Gwen Stefani voice some of the main characters. It's delightfully entertaining to hear them as Trolls characters.

 

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Release date: Nov. 18

What it's about: In this Harry Potter prequel, we go on an adventure with writer Newt Scamander in New York's secretive community of witches and wizards.

What makes it the best: It gives us a little taste of the Harry Potter world we've been missing and introduces us to a slew of new characters. Basically it's every HP fan's dream come true.

 

Moana

Release date: Nov. 23

What it's about: Moana, the daughter of a Polynesian tribe chief, is chosen by the ocean itself to set off on a journey to discover a mythical island with the help of demigod Maui. Together they help her family and and set things right.

What makes it the best: This clever, funny and sweet movie will keep you smiling the whole way through. And we have a new and amazing Disney princess! Enough said.
