The Biggest TikTok Food Trends of 2022

If you're anything like us, your TikTok For You Page is probably littered with a consistent stream of drool-worthy food videos (in addition to the dances, fashion trends and hilarious lip-syncs we're also used to seeing, of course).

After all, who can forget the viral tomato feta pasta, "nature's cereal" and oatmeal bakes of 2021? But with so much content coming at us all the time, it can be easy to lose track of the trends we actually wanted to try out! Worry not, dear scroller, as we're here to help. Let's recap some of the biggest TikTok food trends of 2022 (so far, anyway):

Smashed Potatoes

You've heard of roasted potatoes, and you've almost definitely heard of (and probably had plenty of platefuls of) mashed potatoes, but have you given smashed potatoes a try yet? Popular on TikTok, smashed potatoes have a deliciously crispy outer texture thanks to the increased surface area that gets roasted in the oven. Plus, they're just so fun to smash down onto the pan, making it a total win-win recipe.

@fitgreenmind Saw this trend at @carleigh – plantyou and fell in love 😋🥔 #potatoes #veganfood #veganrecipes #easyrecipe #quickrecipes ♬ Originalton – Maya Leinenbach

Homemade Hot Cocoa

When the weather outside gets frightful, there's nothing quite like a cup of hot cocoa to heat you up on a chilly day. While you could just go for a classic packet of your preferred pre-packaged mix, there's a new TikTok food trend that might just have you trying to make your own from scratch instead. Most often, these recipes will feature pieces of real chocolate that get melted down, making it a much more decadent drinkable dessert than what you might be otherwise used to.

@kkearah.kkraus Homemade hot cocoa is the best ❄️☕️ and SUPER easy. This recipe is by Ashlee Marie! (You can google it 😉) #worldsbesthotchocolate #homemadehotcocoa #homemadehotchocolate #hotcocoarecipe #hotchocolaterecipe #howtomakehotchocolate #hotcocoa #hotchocolate #winterbeverage ♬ original sound – Kearah

Pink Sauce

While plenty of sauces are somewhat pinkish in hue, this TikTok food trend is quite unlike the rest. Popularized by private chef and TikTok creator @chef.pii, the sauce simply known as "pink sauce" features a unique combination of sunflower oil, honey, chili pepper, garlic and the shining star ingredient of dragon fruit (AKA pitaya). While it can also feature portions of milk, lemon juice and other add-ins, the dragon fruit is the key ingredient that provides that ultra-strong pink color that gives the sauce its name.

'Lazy Girl Meals'

When you just aren't feeling like spending what feels like ages stirring something on the stove, TikTok has just the solution you need: lazy girl meals. Plenty of creators have hopped on the trend, sharing their go-to recipes for those nights when they simply can't be bothered to use up extra energy in the kitchen. Instead, they craft creative meals built on base ingredients that are easy to throw in the microwave, air fryer or a pot of boiling water. When you need a little extra inspiration to not order takeout, you can always count on TikTok to have you covered.

@gianna.gfit All of my meals are superrrr simple like this! Its easy, tastes good, and gets the job done! #mealprep #lazygirlmeals #food #healthyfood #healthymealprep #healthymeals #nutrition #fitness #fit ♬ original sound – Gianna Gentile

Butter Boards

If you haven't seen this trend all over your TikTok feed yet, have you even been on the app in the last month? Butter boards have officially taken over from charcuterie boards when it comes to ways to impress your party guests, and it isn't hard to imagine why. From savory to salty and even sweet, this TikTok food trend is extremely versatile.

Birria Tacos

While we love tacos in just about any form, the dippable version known as birria tacos just seems to be superior. A Mexican dish that recently rose to popularity across the U.S., birria tacos take more effort to whip up than traditional tacos, but they're well worth it, trust us (and plenty of people on TikTok, of course).

Perfectly Round Cookies

You know how, when you bake a batch of perfectly gooey chocolate chip cookies, some of them just turn out a little misshapen? Well, in 2022, a hack has gone viral on TikTok for making perfectly round cookies each and every time. This trend is simple, involving nothing more than a can or a glass (and cookie dough, of course). When the cookies first come out of the oven (AKA are still warm), you can place your glass or can over top the ones that need a little help shaping up and swirl it gently around before revealing a picture-perfect circular cookie.

@kroger If you're a stickler for perfectly round cookies, this HACK is for you. 🍪 #kroger #cookies #chocolatechipcookie #bakingtiktok #foodhacks #lifehack ♬ original sound – Kroger

'Marry Me' Chicken

This dish is an absolute winner—no wedding required. A TikTok food trend that went viral for its romantic name and simple ingredients, Marry Me chicken features chicken breast cooked with sundried tomatoes, heavy cream, parmesan cheese and basil. From there, it can be served however you like: think bread, pasta or even a bowl of rice to make it a whole meal worthy of winning someone's heart.

@downshiftology This "marry me chicken" recipe will definitely win over dinner guests… and may even prompt a partner to propose. 😉 Essentially, it's a Tuscan chicken recipe with juicy, golden chicken breast simmered in a luxurious parmesan cream sauce filled with sun-dried tomatoes, onions, garlic, and plenty of spinach. And while I'm making the classic version with dairy today, you can also make it 100% dairy-free. Find those substitutions and notes on the recipe on my website. And for complete step-by-step cooking instructions, make sure to watch my YouTube video. Tteokbokki (Spicy Korean Rice Cakes)

Considering how beautifully versatile rice is, it's no wonder why yet another rice-based dish finds its way onto this list of the top TikTok food trends of 2022. This one is ttekbokki, or Korean rice cakes. Despite the image your mind may conjure up when you hear "rice cakes," this dish is a savory and spicy street food that feels a lot more like gnocchi than a sweet rice cake like you'd find in other recipes on this list.

@iankewks Tteokbokki 🔥 #canada #usa #tteokbokki ♬ Fallin' in a Garden – LLusion

Gourmet Coffee Drinks

While it's pretty safe to say that trends like whipped coffee already had their moment back in 2020 and 2021, gourmet coffee creations have hardly gone anywhere in 2022. Instead, they've simply just gotten more creative than ever, with trends like lavender lattes and gorgeous glasses taking over our feeds throughout the year. The options truly are endless when you need your caffeine fix these days, and TikTok is living proof of that.

@cafecitocondaisy Ahhh a Lavendar Latte! This also tastes amazing with no coffee at all ✨ #minivlog #parati #CheetosReaperReactions #ItsGreatOutdoors #fyp #latinacontentcreator #coffeeathome #aesthetic ♬ Paz en Este Amor – Fidel Rueda

Salads That Aren't Salads

TikTok creator @nutrition_by_meagam popularized a term that we just can't get enough of in 2022: salads that aren't really salads. Think rich, hearty recipes that are still veggie-heavy, but without the leafy greens that typically turn salad-haters off from the traditional "healthy" food. There are entire playlists on TikTok dedicated to this trend, so you can take some solid inspiration next time you feel like being a little healthier while still feeling totally satisfied.

Decadent Desserts

We can hardly go a day scrolling out feeds on TikTok without coming across some form of deliciously decadent dessert, and there are even creators who treat this as their specialty. These desserts are far from simple, easily replicated recipes and more five-star restaurant-worthy creations that could just as easily be referred to as art.

'Healthy Coke'

If you haven't seen this one across your feed this summer, we don't know where you've been because it isn't TikTok. This trend has taken over due to the simplicity of its ingredients and straight-up weirdness—oh yeah, we're talking about the "healthy coke" food trend on TikTok. It's made of just sparkling water and balsamic vinegar, with some creators swearing that it tastes just like the real deal Coca-Cola. We're a bit more skeptical, but judging by the popularity and healthiness of this trend, it's worth a shot.

Hailey Bieber's Strawberry Glaze Smoothie

While most of us probably don't have access to the actual Hailey Bieber smoothie at Erewhon (or just can't afford it at a pricey $17), TikTok has come through by teaching us how to create this beautiful trending pink drink from home. While the key ingredients for the actual strawberry glaze smoothie are a little hard to find—especially the sea moss gel, collagen and other skin-fueling foods—you can whip up your own version with:

  • Frozen strawberries
  • Dates
  • Avocado
  • Maple syrup
  • Vanilla collagen powder (Vital Proteins Vanilla Collagen Peptides is a TikTok favorite)
  • Almond milk (preferably MALK)
  • Coconut cream
  • Strawberry glaze

Grated Egg Avocado Toast

When this healthy TikTok food trend first popped up on our feeds, we were hesitant—after all, why mess with a classic like avocado toast? But adding grated hard-boiled egg on top, while it may sound weird and even unappetizing at first, actually takes this brunch table classic up a notch to a whole other level of deliciousness. It's like a saltier (thank the yolk), creamier (that's the white) version of grating parmesan on your toast, but it comes with an extra pack of protein, too.

Korean Cucumber Salad

If words like "healthy," "spicy," "zesty" and "delicious" strike your fancy, then you'll want to listen up because we're talking about the Korean cucumber salad (oi muchim) trend. All you need to make this delightfully light snack is some cucumbers (preferably mini), salt, fresh garlic, onion, rice vinegar, sugar, fish sauce, sesame oil, green onion and gochugaru seasoning. However, you can omit the fish sauce if you're vegetarian, and add some extra sesame seeds for extra crunch if you want. The real best part about this side dish, though, is that it's something you can make by mixing all the ingredients into one single bowl. Fast, easy, delicious and it's as good on day two in the fridge as when you first make it? Yes, please.

Cloud Bread

If you're gluten-free (or just like the sound of this delightfully light TikTok food trend), you'll want to listen up. "Cloud bread," which is essentially a bread made with egg whites and a couple of other pantry-friendly ingredients (often sugar and cornstarch)—but no flour. While it's not nearly as satiating or bite-worthy as the real thing, cloud bread is still fun and easy to make and can do the trick when you need a good gluten-free option that's pretty versatile in nature. In fact, you can even make a cloud bread version of tortillas or pita bread!

 Custard Yogurt Toast

Speaking of bread, let's turn to a 2022 TikTok food trend that actually features the real thing: custard yogurt toast. Yes, this one is as good as it sounds—it's basically a sweet yet tangy mix between cheesecake and French toast. But the best part about it? It only takes a few ingredients and it can be made right in your air fryer.

Orange Juice + Espresso

Need a little caffeine along with your custard yogurt toast for breakfast? How about an orange juice coffee? Yeah, it may sound a bit odd, but many TikTokers swear by the recipe of adding a shot of espresso right into their glass of OJ. This trend makes a bit of sense though—at least in theory—when you consider that the sweetness and acidity of orange juice balance the bitterness of espresso (but you can try it and decide for yourself).

Emily Mariko's Salmon Bowl

Sushi-related recipes have really dominated the TikTok food trends of 2022 so far, but few are quite as iconic as Emily Mariko's viral salmon bowl trick. It involves a bowl of (typically leftover/reheated) rice and salmon, plenty of sauces and avocado, but the kicker is that it's eaten with a sheet of nori per bite. Basically, you'll put the nori down on top of your mixed bowl and an avocado slice, then pick it up with chopsticks so that the rice and fillings are surrounded by the nori to make it almost like a sushi roll (minus the rolling). In one word, this TikTok food trend is simply genius.

@zoetheolive everybody moved on, I stayed there🍚 #emilymariko #salmon #rice #studentmeals #unistudent #seaweed ♬ About Damn Time – Lizzo

Rice Cake Desserts

Craving a little something sweet after your salmon bowl? Try a dessert rice cake! This TikTok food trend is a favorite of many health-focused creators, as they take boring old rice cakes and level them up by adding your nut butter of choice, melted chocolate (preferably dark for the health benefits) and a little sprinkle of sea salt on top. If you want to take it up another notch, add a layer of mashed berries (or jam if you're in a pinch, but beware of the sugar that this spread is typically packed with) under the chocolate for a quick simple burst of flavor.

Salads You Eat Like Salsa

If you haven't seen Baked by Melissa's renowned green goddess salad recipe (best eaten with corn chips, of course) at some point this year, have you even been on TikTok at all? Either way, this zesty, fresh mix of greens and goodness will make you suddenly regret your days of making your mom have to try and trick you into eating your veggies.

Turkish Eggs

Eggs have been a worthy component of our breakfast and brunch plates for a long time, but it's time we remove the scrambled and fried eggs off their throne. That's because one of the biggest TikTok food trends of 2022 has been the rise of Turkish eggs (also called çılbır), a savory and decadent burst of flavor that involves setting poached eggs atop a bed of garlicky goodness—and by "goodness," we mean Greek yogurt and lots of peppery, herbed butter or oil. It's a great break from the sugary sweet brunch dishes we're sued to seeing, so it's no wonder why this one has taken over our famished feeds.

Another honorable mention on the eggs front—shakshuka, another Middle-Eastern egg-based dish that's perfect for your brunch table (this one involves a tomato-forward stew with eggs baked in and served with bread).

Last Year's Trends, But Make Them Crispier

Forget the viral salmon rice nori bowl and discover its crispier cousin: The crispy tuna rice bites (eaten like sushi, of course). The same can go for tacos, the biggest TikTok food trends for 2022 include fried taco shells to keep things crispy even when your fillings start falling out. It adds a whole lot of ASMR-laden texture that your tastebuds are sure to appreciate, too.

Hot Oil Noodles

Who doesn't love diving into a plate of hot, garlicky and just-perfectly enough spicy noodles when they need a bit of comfort food in their life? With all that we've been through over the last couple of years, it's no wonder why "cozy" is a big part of the biggest TiokTok food trends for 2022 so far, and the hot oil noodles we can't stop seeing are a perfect example of that. Made with simple ingredients that can be easily cooked by even not-so-seasoned chefs, these delicious noodles typically just involve cooking ramen noodles before mixing them in with a mixture you make by adding things like garlic and chili flakes to hot sesame oil. Throw in some veggies for extra flavor (and vitamins/nutrients, of course) or tofu for extra protein or simply keep it as-is for a quick yet comforting meal that always hits the spot.

Dips of All Kinds

Are you a "dip girl/guy"? Whether you classify yourself as such (as many who post videos related to this TikTok food trend do) or not, there's no doubt that you enjoy at least one or two of the popular dips you'll see on your FYP these days. From hummus in every color of the rainbow to healthy yogurt-based dips and more indulgent but equally as delicious cheese dips galore, there's no doubt you'll find one that's perfect for snacking on with your favorite veggies or chips.

Baked Oats That Look More Like Dessert Than Breakfast

Move over, overnight oats—baked oats are having a moment right now. This TikTok food trend has risen in popularity in 2022, especially thanks to creators who make versions that look and taste like chocolate chip cookies, lava cakes and so many other of our favorite desserts. Made with less sugar and, of course, nutrient-dense oats, though, these trending tasty options are a much healthier addition to your breakfast or brunch plate than your average waffle or pancake stack (without losing out on flavor).

The Return of Carbs as King

Sure, there's a time and place for "healthy" replacements for our favorite carbs (looking at you, cauliflower rice), but we all must admit that nothing tastes quite as satisfying as the good old-fashioned gluten-filled carbs we've always loved. Thankfully, carbs are having their moment in the sun again thanks to pasta- and bread-based recipes that are trending on TikTok. You won't have to scroll for very long before finding a creamy pasta recipe with some noodles that will make you instantly 10 times hungrier or some envy-worthy baguette sandwiches stuffed to the brim with all your favorite ingredients. Grab your favorite loaf of bread or box of pasta and get ready to dive in.

Takeout, But Make It at Home

Who doesn't love ordering in your favorite food when you're feeling lazy? While there's always a time and place for takeout, there's now a new TikTok food trend taking over that might just take the place of your long-term relationship with Uber Eats. From Chipotle bowls you make at home for half the cost (and probably half the calories) to General Tso's chicken that could put even your favorite Panda Express order to shame, there's an easy and delicious way to make most of your favorite fast-food staples right from the comfort of your own home. To participate in this trend and find out what all the hype is about, just type in the food you're craving (and desperate to order in from) to your TikTok and have a little scroll before finding a dupe that will have your drooling in no time.

Ricotta Toast

Move over avocado toast, 2022 has a new toast-topper that's winning over our brunch spreads as well as our TikTok feeds. Ricotta, with its smooth texture and savory-or-sweet versatility, is a great way to switch up your breakfast or brunch while keeping things fairly healthy—and photo-worthy.

Spicy Vodka Pasta

While this TikTok food trend may have originated with model Gigi Hadid's well-known recipe, the culinary creatives of TikTok have taken their own spins in recent months with plenty of takes on a classic penne alla vodka. Forget the meat and replace it with lots of spice if you're trying to recreate this popular menu staple.
