Brooke Carter Talks Netflix’s Damsel and Working Alongside Millie Bobby Brown

With a star-studded cast including Millie Bobby Brown, Nick Robinson, Angela Bassett and Robin Wright, Netflix's Damsel has to be one of our most anticipated films this year.

The film follows a young woman named Elodie, played by Millie, who agrees to marry the charming prince (Nick Robinson), only to learn it's actually a treacherous ruse and she's being ritualistically sacrificed to a fire-breathing dragon. In the movie, 13-year-old actress Brooke Carter makes her feature film debut as Floria, the younger sister of Elodie, who also gets caught up in the trap. With Damsel hitting Netflix on March 8,  we had the chance to chat with Brooke all about her history as a performer and the new film. Read our full interview with the rising star below.

Sweety High: When did you discover your passion for acting? Was there any specific a-ha moment that made you realize it was the path for you?

Brooke Carter: At age 2 I fell in love with Hairspray the musical and used to tap dance to the DVD at home. I started at dance classes and took part in a few stage shows when my mum put me forward to Bonnie and Betty. They accepted me into their books, and the rest is history.

SH: Can you tell us about Damsel? What's the story, and where does your character, Floria, fit into the narrative?

BC: Damsel is a fairytale with an unexpected dark twist. Floria is the sister of Elodie and an uplifting character who believes in happily ever after, so when all goes wrong her view on this cliche is changed. She is one of the youngest characters in the movie so is quite vulnerable.

SH: How similar are you to Floria in real life? What would you say are your biggest similarities and differences?

BC: I believe that I have many similarities to Floria. I am whimsical and naive, much like she is. The biggest difference between us is I feel I am a little more mature.

SH: What was it like to work alongside Millie Bobby Brown, Nick Robinson and Robin Wright in the film?

BC: It was such a great and memorable experience! They were such great role models and had so many tips and tricks to offer me for future projects. It was what any budding actress would dream of being a part of.

SH: What was your most memorable moment from the set?

BC: There were so many it was hard to pick! I think one of my favorites was filming on my 12th birthday. I had a cake on set, and everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to me at the end of the day. It was such a surreal moment.
