A Definitive Ranking of Each Ingredient in Traditional Chex Mix Snack Mix

Chex Mix's Traditional Snack Mix is a classic treat. We're guessing that if you enjoy it regularly, you have a favorite ingredient or two that you tend to pick out of the bag, leaving the scraps for someone else to dig through.

We believe there's a hierarchy when it comes to the deliciousness of each piece, but where does your favorite rank? Keep scrolling to find out.

 

6. Ring Pretzel

There's nothing wrong with pretzels per se, but they're the least tantalizing item in the bag, simply because of their slick, smooth surfaces. That texture means Chex Mix's salty, savory seasoning doesn't stick to them at all, and the round shape of the ring pretzel all but ensures that it doesn't hold on to any flavoring. Compared to the other bold flavors in the mix, it just can't stand out.

 

5. Window-Shaped Pretzel

The window-shaped Chex Mix pretzel fares slightly better because it has more edges and surface area, giving it more opportunities to pick up the salty seasoning. A little more flavor and a slightly crunchier pretzel bump it up a step.

 

4. Mini Breadstick

This mini breadstick probably wouldn't be too exciting all on its own,  but once it's been rolled around in oh-so-salty seasoning, it becomes a crunchy delight. While most people probably won't cite it as a Chex Mix favorite, we think it's pretty underrated.

 

3. Wheat Chex

A lot of people don't even know that there are two types of Chex cereal in the traditional snack mix, but we're discerning individuals who can always tell the difference. The wheat Chex are slightly darker in color and tighter in texture, giving them a crispy and slightly brittle flake. They're full of nooks and crannies that hold on to every morsel of seasoning that touches them, but texturally we think there's a little room for improvement.

 

2. Corn Chex

We only have a couple of issues with the wheat Chex in Chex Mix, and the corn Chex fixes all of them. These pieces are softer and puffier, so they retain their bite without being too crunchy. All the while, they retain the woven surface that ensures every single bite will be packed with salty goodness.

 

1. Rye Chips

Chex Mix's rye chips are what keep us coming back to the snack mix again and again. Their flavor is even bolder than everything else in the bag, with a meaty, garlic-y taste on top of all that cravable salt. Plus, the crunchy snap of the rounded chip is totally irresistible.
