Christian Lalama Reveals the Meaning of New Song ‘Girlfriend’—and What He Looks for in a Girl
After a nearly two-year break from releasing new music, Christian Lalama is back with a vengeance, and we couldn't be happier about it.
His new song, "Girlfriend," is out today with a music video, showcasing Christian's more mature and refined sound, and his fans are already in love. We think this is just the start of the next era for Christian, and we got the chance to chat with Christian about his new sound—and what he's looking for in a girlfriend.
Sweety High: What does it mean to you to be releasing music again for the first time in almost two years? Why did "Girlfriend" feel like the perfect track for your comeback?
Christian Lalama: It's definitely been a minute, but "Girlfriend" is the perfect track for this moment in time because I feel like it's what everybody needs right now. An easy listen, a little love and a lot of fun!
SH: What was the songwriting process behind "Girlfriend"? Does it reflect your real sentiments right now—especially around the Valentine's Day holiday?
CL: I was approached with this idea by my label and super excited at the idea of reinvigorating such a classic record. Our team worked with a few writers to turn it into a full song and I'm stoked with how it came out. The timing also couldn't be better because it's the season of love and I do in fact need a girlfriend…

SH: What are the most important qualities you look for in a potential girlfriend?
CL: Someone who doesn't take themselves too seriously, likes to have fun and can match my energy.
SH: What's your favorite lyric from the song? Why?
CL: "You might hit the jackpot." To me, this just means you gotta take a chance because you simply don't know what you're missing until you give it a shot.

SH: How do you feel you've evolved as an artist since your last release? Do you feel that you're moving in a new direction musically?
CL: No doubt I have changed and evolved a lot in the last year and a half. I've grown a lot personally and musically. I must have recorded hundreds of songs in the last year. My songs and my sound have evolved to better reflect who I am today.

SH: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
CL: Just that I'm pumped to have you all hear these new songs and hope you love them!
