Get the Closet of Your Dreams With These 6 Simple Tips

Face it, getting dressed for school each morning can be disastrous if your closet looks like it was just hit by a raging tornado.

When there's a pile of clothes on the floor and no clear organization, you can't see all the cute clothes you actually own. Womp, womp.

What if we told you your life could be happier simply by rearranging your closet? Well, it can!

We reached out to Kendra Stanley, founder of Healthy Organizing—an organization aimed to help people achieve their personal goals by decluttering their spaces—and she gave us six essential tips for creating the perfect closet space.

Get ready to be clutter free. ????

1. Let Go of the Old

Kendra's most sound advice is simple: "Purge, donate, organize and repeat."

Before you do anything else, carefully go through everything in your closet, and if you haven't worn something in the past year or more, it's time to do as Elsa would, and let it go.

Think of it this way: When you get rid of old items, you make room for new ones.

2. Put Like Items Together

This may seem like an obvious organization tip, but it's crucial.

Kendra explained that you must organize your closet by putting like items together (and by season if need be) and in the order that you wear them the most.

This will allow you to navigate your closet space with ease. You'll never spend hours looking for that hot pink top if your shirts are color-coded.

3. Have a Separate Storage Area for Memorabilia Clothing

If it's hard for you to let go of some sentimental clothing items, this is the tip for you.

"For memorabilia clothing that you wore for holidays, weddings, prom, sports and other special events (that you will no longer wear), designate a clear plastic bin, label and store in your closet or somewhere else in the house," Kendra suggested.

You can keep the items as long they're kept neat and labeled.

4. Invest in Shelving and Clothing Containers

Sometimes, investing in organization products can have a major pay off.

Kendra has turned us onto shelving and open top canvas containers. Shelving can be perfect for items including shoes and sweaters, and open top containers are great for sleepwear, undergarments, socks, tights, tank tops, belts, sportswear and other small items.

5. If Your Closet is Small, Get Creative

If you have a small closet, you know just how difficult it is to arrange it in a way that fits all your clothing.

Don't lose hope, though! Kendra suggests you get creative with your space by using multiple hangers, smaller racks or space-saving devices.

You'll be amazed how much more you can fit in your closet if you utilize your space and the above products properly.

6. Always Put Away Your Clothes

This is major.

No matter how tired you are at the end of the day, Kendra stressed that you must, "Put away, hang up and fold your clothes so you can easily find what you need the next time. This is a great habit to create, as once you start, you will immediately see the benefits and won't go back."

You can do it.
