Everything You Need to Know About Daith Piercings

Whether you're thinking of adding some new hardware to your ears or just want to know for future reference, we're here to help you learn more on everything you need to know about ear piercings.

One of these types of piercings, and one that seems to be taking over right now, is the daith piercing. No, you didn't read that word wrong—the "daith" is the part of your ear that connects the inner and outer ear, AKA the innermost piece of cartilage (think just above the opening to your ear canal above the tragus).

It's a delicate area that makes a piercing an attractive and interesting addition, but that isn't the only thing you should know about them. With that said, we have everything you need to know about daith piercings covered right here in this guide. Let's start with:

1. Are They Popular?

Daith piercings, while by no means as popular as lobe piercings or even your average helix piercing, have grown in popularity in recent years. In fact, you might even notice some of your favorite celebs sporting one without even knowing what it was called. Either a small hoop or a stud can be worn through this type of piercing, but many people get them for reasons other than just adornment.

While not scientifically proven, some people believe that daith piercings can help alleviate migraines due to the placement on a particular pressure point. However, many scientists believe that this may just be a placebo effect and not at all rooted in anything legitimate, so take that "benefit" of daith piercings with a grain of salt.

2. How Much Does Getting a Daith Piercing Hurt?

Like with all piercings, some amount of pain can be expected when you're getting a daith piercing. The pain amount differs depending on personal pain tolerance levels and other factors, so it will vary from person to person. When it comes to everything you need to know about preparing for your daith piercing, you'll want to know that it can take slightly longer than other piercings to complete (meaning the pain may not be over "in a flash" like with other types of ear piercings). However, pain is subjective and you likely won't remember the pain of your piercing in the long run. It will have to be pierced with a professional piercing needle rather than a gun, so make sure you discuss all the details with the person or shop you go to before committing.

3. What Does the Healing and Aftercare Process Look Like?

Like with most ear piercings, you will want to adhere to a few key rules during the healing process to abide by proper aftercare. These include:

  • Avoid consuming caffeine or other substances that may affect your blood before getting your piercing
  • Get a salt solution (likely in the form of a spray) to properly clean your piercing while it heals
  • Try to move your piercing around a bit without removing it to prevent your tissue from trying to close up around the piercing
  • Be careful to avoid any trauma or tugging at your fresh piercing, so you may need to adjust your sleeping position or other regular habits to prevent any irritationDaith piercing with plugged lobe piercing: Shutterstock. A daith piercing and beautiful ear stretcher
