We Spoke With Aparna Avasarala, Founder and CEO of Clothing Brand, Denimrush

When we stumble across a new clothing brand that we fall in love with, we always want to learn more.

Denimrush instantly piqued our interest, with its colorful tie-dye sets and seriously killer Instagram feed. We spoke with the founder and CEO of Denimrush, Aparna Avasarala, all about her brand. Not only did she build this from the ground up, but as a South Asian woman, she's absolutely killing it with her customizable sets.

Want to find out more about this superstar? Keep reading for our full interview with Aparna:

Sweety High: Tell us about yourself and the start of Denimrush.

Aparna Avasarala: The idea for Denimrush came about one night in New York City when I wore a denim jacket that I had painted myself because I'm always creating things and making art. After receiving a lot of inquiries about custom painted jackets, Denimrush was born! From there we've evolved our line into sweats, dresses and button-downs. Prior to Denimrush, I used to be an experiential retail designer and worked with brands on creating experiential pop-ups and brand experiences. So I love to use the skills from my old job to create new experiences at Denimrush. At Denimrush, we like to use paint and art as a tool to empower creators of all kinds! All of our pieces are hand-painted and made to order.

SH: Where do you draw your inspiration?

AA: Definitely nature—a big part of our DNA is color! I like to look to nature for inspiration when I develop new color palettes for our sets. Wearing color can easily change your mood, so it's something we really consider when creating pieces!

SH: Has it been difficult to work during COVID-19 with all the restrictions in place?

AA: Yes! When the pandemic hit, we had to pivot our business plan. Denimrush started as an experiential event company where we work with retailers, festivals and corporations to host live customization events and offer a unique shopping experience. So, when the lockdowns and restrictions happened we had to quickly figure out how to sell online. And the supply chain throughout this time has been so volatile—everything is either out of stock or stuck in transit and lots of factories are shut down. It's been challenging to navigate over the last few months, but it's getting better!

SH: What's the most popular product on your site?

AA: Our tie-dye sweat sets! They are perfect for the 9 to 5 and the 5 to 9. From outdoor to indoor, our solid sweat sets are the perfect uniform for chic head to toe comfort! Trust us, it's the best sweats you'll ever own.

SH: Any favorite celebs wearing your apparel?

AA: Yes! We have gifted them to The D'Amelio sisters and saw some pieces worn on their socials! Others include Tati McQuay, Angel Merino, Roxette Howe, Miss Universe, Miss USA, Teen USA and Whitney Simmons.

SH: Any advice for young teen entrepreneurs?

AA: I struggle the most with overthinking things. The best advice I've ever received is to keep it simple. It's better to make a decision and try something new rather than stay in limbo, because it leads to action and you never know what that decision might lead you to.

SH: Anything else you want us to know?

AA: If you have an idea or concept for a business, just go for it! Trust me, no one knows what they're doing! There will be many highs and lows but you just have to adapt to the situation and allow yourself to be comfortable with a little chaos!
