Devon Cole Explains the Aspirational Message Behind Her Friendship Anthem, ‘I Got You’
Canadian singer-songwriter Devon Cole is best known for her mega-viral hit song "W.I.T.C.H.," but as we head into summer, her latest single, "I Got You," is the one we plan to have on repeat.
The airy, catchy bop released last week on May 10, serving as an ode to friendship—as well as a promise. The pop track is all about the kinds of things that best friends do for each other, though, as Devon admits, it's not necessarily about the type of friend she is right now, and more about the kind she's actively working to be. We got the chance to learn even more about the single in the interview with Devon below.
The Story Behind 'I Got You'
Devon Cole: It's ironic for me to have written this song, because I historically haven't been the best friend in the world. I tend to hermit, and I usually take three to five business days to respond to people. I broke down crying when we decided to release this song, because I realized I had a lot of work to do to be the kind of friend I'm singing about. This song is about being in your friends' corners consistently—and I'm working to do that.

What 'I Got You' Means
DC: This song has had such a positive impact in my life in that it's forced me to be a better friend. I couldn't release a song about being a good friend without practicing what I preach, so in the months leading up to this release I've been putting in more of an effort with my loved ones. And it's been really great for my mental health—go figure. I hope this song brings people together, or inspires someone to change the way that it inspired me to change.

Devon's Favorite Lyric
DC: My favorite lyric is, "If you need a hand, I got two." Because that's the lyric that started this whole song—I was texting a friend who needed help with something and I texted her that. I think it's a funny turn of phrase.
Devon's Biggest Advice
DC: It's helped me to make a mental list of the most important people in my life and put the work in to make them feel valued.
