Learn How to Make Your Own Rune Stones With This Easy DIY

Earlier this week, we learned all about learning to read runes from expert Dr. Anne Reith. Now, you can learn how to make your own runes.

If you aren't familiar with runes, they're small stones adorned with special symbols said to give spiritual guidance. You can read more about them in our interview with Anne HERE.

Making your own set is super simple. Just follow the steps below and you'll be on your way to reading your own fortune.

You'll Need:

Needed supplies to make DIY runes

  • A set of at least 25 small stones of your choice. You may want to have extras in case you make mistakes.
  • Permanent markers. Black is good for light stones, and metallic (bronze or silver) are good for darker stones. Feel free to mix and match!
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Paper towels
  • A baking sheet
  • Aluminum foil
  • An oven

Directions

1. Start by cleaning your stones. Even if they look clean to begin with, give them a quick wash with soap and warm water. Dry them and use the rubbing alcohol and paper towels to clean off any excess grime.

2. Once the alcohol is totally dried, you can start drawing the symbols (reference the image below) on your runes using your marker. Try practicing drawing them first on paper to get them just right. Notice there are only 24 symbols below—that's because one of the runes is left blank.

3. Once you've drawn all your runes, you'll want to let them dry for at least a day before moving on to the next step.

4. Line a baking sheet with foil and place your stones, rune side up, on the sheet. Without turning the oven on, place the baking sheet in the oven carefully, then with the help of an adult, heat the oven to about 200° F/95° C. Once the oven reaches that temperature, leave them in for about half an hour, then carefully remove them and leave them somewhere to cool for a couple of hours.

5. Once they're totally cool, your runes are pretty much ready to use—though you may want to cleanse them in sunlight first. Place them in a small bag and follow Anne Reith's instructions to get started.
