Dryboy Shares the Daydream That Inspired His New Single, ‘How 2 Love Again’

Rising alt-pop singer-songwriter Dryboy is perhaps best known for his viral hit, "Summer Nights" featuring Clever, and it seems his latest single, "How 2 Love Again," is poised to be yet another sensation.

The track comes from his recent debut EP, Alone and Alive, and earlier this week, he released its emotionally resonant music video. With heartfelt vocals and a moody, dream-like sound, it's a song about reuniting with a past love and rekindling the romance now that the two are on different paths in life. It's a story of the two-sided coin of love and heartbreak, and we think it's even more powerful when paired with the nostalgic new video. We got the chance to chat with Dryboy himself to learn all about the meaning of the track, the story behind the music video and so much more in the interview below.

The Story Behind 'How 2 Love Again'

Dryboy: Prior to creating the song, I found myself daydreaming on the balcony listening to the beat my friend Jacob Wice had sent me. It carried a nostalgic feeling but yet felt so present. I began thinking of past relationships and the "what if" that we all go through when we find ourselves at the end of a relationship. My "what if" was, what if we crossed paths now that we're in different walks in life and taught each other how to love again? I put myself in that scenario and began to write. Not necessarily based on events that happened but it was because of my romantic past that I was able to grab inspiration for this song.

What 'How 2 Love Again' Means

Dryboy: Peace. I say peace because music, for me, is being able to say words I can't necessarily express in a normal sentence. The same way people write their thoughts in a notebook is how I treat music. This song brought peace to my present self and patched up a hole I had in the past after losing someone I love. I was able to sit with the fact that time of my life is over, but I was able to express how I wish it could've turned out through my music. In the end, I found myself content and I hope that anyone who listens feels the same.

Dryboy's Favorite Lyric

Dryboy: "Got one foot in the present but the others behind." I think we all know how that feels. We act off of our past and sometimes it's hard to move forward or to give something a chance because of it. Sometimes, we need to take that foot out of the past and keep it in the present, moving forward to our future.

'How 2 Love Again' in Alone and Alive

Dryboy: "How 2 Love Again" embodies what it means to be alone. When I wrote this, I was alone, lost in thought, and was able to take parts of my past that would normally bring me down into something beautiful—into something that brings me peace. Being "alone and alive" is taking all the things that hurt you and coming to peace with them—peace with yourself at the end of the journey.

On the Music Video

Dryboy: The initial concept for the video was a romantic date filled with laughs and smiles and how I'd envision showing someone love again would be like. "How 2 Love Again" is not a sad track at all! It's filled with love and that nostalgic feeling you can't exactly place your finger on. We decided to shoot with vintage cameras to give it that exact effect, to put the listener into the headspace I was in. Visually we did exactly that.

What's Next

Dryboy: Lots of music. Music to dance to, drink to and cry to. I might even show some of my Hispanic side on some of these newer songs—you'll just have to wait and find out!

Final Thoughts

Dryboy: Fun fact! "How 2 Love Again" is my favorite song I've made to date yet. I made it in my bedroom after getting off the worst shift I had in my life two years ago.
