Eat Like a Woman’s Plant-Based Protein Bars Are Formulated for Women’s Needs
When I first heard about the Eat Like a Woman brand, I was immediately intrigued.
What does it mean to "eat like a woman," and why exactly would it be important that the nutrients in their products differ from the competition? It turns out that just because women can do all the things men can doesn't mean that our nutritional needs are identical. When I was asked if I'd be interested in trying their protein bars, I had to say yes and see what all the fuss was about.
The Products
Eat Like a Woman specializes in customized food products formulated specifically for the nutrient needs of women. According to their website, women experience stress, metabolize energy and experience digestion differently from men. That's exactly why the vitamins, minerals and other good stuff in their foods address those unique demands.
Their website sells shake mixes and protein bars, as well as "Eat Like a Woman" cookbooks. I was sent samples of their plant-based bars which come in Coconut Almond and Cherry & Nut flavors, as well as the Chocolate Brownie and Peanut Butter & Ancient Grains flavors I got to try. 12-packs of each flavor cost $33.99, while variety packs are available as well.
The Experience
Chocolate Brownie LOVE Bar
Each one of Eat Like a Woman's protein bars has a theme as well as a flavor, and the theme for the Chocolate Brownie bar is "love." I didn't quite understand what that meant, at first, but a little digging has led me to believe this bar is all about heart health. It contains no cholesterol or trans fats, and is high in heart-healthy Omega-3s.
When I opened up the bar, I found it a little bit greasy, but not unpleasant. The texture was soft and chewy, with a little bit of crunch from the chia seeds, and the flavor was chocolatey, but not incredibly sweet. In fact, it was slightly bitter. It didn't taste all that different to other chocolate-flavored protein bars I've had in the past. However, this bar is free of soy and gluten, and boasts 12 grams of protein and nine grams of fiber in a 170-calorie package, making it extra filling and much more desirable in those respects. And just because the bars are perfectly balanced for women doesn't mean men can't enjoy them, too. At least one dude in my household is particularly fond of this flavor.
Peanut Butter & Ancient Grains ENERGY Bar
This bar is dedicated to energy and the differences in metabolisms between men and women. It's also gluten-free and soy-free, and also includes quinoa for an extra boost during exercise.
While this bar was also slightly greasy and had a similar soft, chewy texture, I liked the flavor twice as much. The peanut butter flavoring has just the right amount of honey sweetness, with a nice crunch from rice, quinoa and chia seeds, as well as nice chunks of peanuts. Though I didn't find this bar quite as filling as the chocolate flavor, I did feel more alert and energized after eating it. The 190-calorie bar also has 14 grams of protein and six grams of fiber.
Bottom Line
If you're curious about protein bars formulated specifically with women in mind, Eat Like a Woman offers exactly that. While I can't verify that their balance of ingredients is exactly what my body needs, I always felt great after eating them, and you can't go wrong with high fiber and plant-based protein.
However, they won't be for everyone. If you dislike the taste of protein bars in general, for example, these probably won't convert you. At almost $3 per bar, they're also not the most inexpensive option around, especially for bulk buying. However, they offer something unusual and unique, and I personally find that they're a great way to kick off the day.
