Emmy Meli Shares the Inspiration Behind Her New Overthinker’s Anthem, ‘Silence’
Singer-songwriter Emmy Meli just dropped her newest single, "Silence," and we're calling it an instant classic as well an anthem for overthinkers everywhere.
Emmy is perhaps best known for her viral self-love track "I AM WOMAN," and she's back at it with her latest soulful R&B-pop track. "Silence" is honest, yet optimistic and powerful, as Emmy comes to grips with her anxious thoughts and the ever-present noise in her mind. The track will also appear on her newly announced debut EP, Hello Stranger, out May 10. Ahead of the big release, we got the opportunity to chat with Emmy all about the new song, the coming-of-age EP and more. Read the full interview below.
The Story Behind 'Silence'
Emmy Meli: "Silence" is a raw, imperfect moment in time that I was able to capture in a lyrical context. My mental health was deteriorating, I was leaning solely on my vices, and (thankfully) my ability to put my deepest, sometimes darkest truths into music. I showed up to the studio exhausted, anxious and overworked with nothing left to give. My producers asked me to put how I was feeling into words with no pressure, and thus "Silence" was born; a track that nearly word for word matches up with my vent session.

What 'Silence' Means
EM: "Silence" to me is a reminder that I'm not alone. It's a reminder that the happiest people have the most going on inside. It's a reminder that we're all imperfect—so why pretend when you can be honest? I also thought it hadn't been talked about enough—the feeling of impenetrable loudness, the helplessness you feel in your own mind, consistently rebelling against you, the exhaustion you feel for just one moment of peace. I hope my listeners can get their peace from this song.

Emmy's Favorite Lyric
EM: Definitely the opening line. It's so honest and also just attention-grabbing and fun to sing.

On 'Silence' and Hello Stranger
EM: Hello Stranger is a coming-of-age story—my coming-of-age story—in which the first chunk of my young adulthood is documented, the ups and downs, the good and bad. With happiness, we have pain, and in pain, we find truth. I think "Silence" is a perfect representation of some of those truths.
Final Thoughts
EM: I will drop an easter egg and say it's one of two introspective tracks on the project, and one of many self-reflective, vulnerable tracks to come!
