What to Know About Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth

If you're anything like us, you've tried just about everything you can get your hands on for hair growth.

If it claims to make strands longer and stronger or stimulate the scalp to support hair growth, we've probably purchased it at some point in the past. While these products have ranged from almost effective to a downright waste of money with not a whole lot of change to our hair, we can't help but get excited every time we see a new trend pop up that claims to be a miracle solution to hair growth.

Enter rosemary oil—the current it girl of the hair care world, taking over TikTok like a new dance that all your favorite influencers have to try out for themselves. The videos are reason enough to want to try out the natural hair growth serum for ourselves, as many people across the internet claim that it was a complete game changer that spiked hair growth in virtually no time. But what do we really know about rosemary oil, and is it worth trying yourself? While we are by no means experts, in the name of great hair days ahead, we've put together everything you need to know about it first.

What Is Rosemary Oil?

If hearing rosemary makes you think of the herbs you see on Thanksgiving, you're on to something. Rosemary is an herb native to the Mediterranean region that can be made into an oil, and it has been for a long time due to its potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial (not to mention nourishing) abilities. It's been used in everything from perfumes to skincare and, of course, haircare for a while now, but has only recently taken the beauty industry by storm thanks to claims of how well it works for hair growth.

How Do You Use It?

Today, the rosemary oil you use for your hair typically comes in one of two forms: a tincture that you apply to the roots of your hair (AKA your scalp) via dropper, or a spray. You also don't necessarily want to apply it every night, as the frequency that you use it will depend on your hair texture and scalp sensitivity. Many products are made to be washed out like a pre-rinse, especially since too much can leave your hair feeling greasy. Some people even recommend mixing the oil into your shampoo or conditioner since you're washing it out anyway, but we'd just go with following the directions on whichever products you choose to purchase.

Are There Certain Products You Should Use?

While you can find recipes for making your own rosemary oil at home, buying a pre-formulated one is probably a safer (and potentially more effective) route. Don't just go pouring straight rosemary essential oil on your scalp either, as some formulas can cause irritation if they aren't diluted properly. If you're looking for a good one to start with, we'd recommend any of the following:

  • G+H Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil: $20
  • Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil: $10.29
  • AROMATICA Rosemary Root Enhancer: $12.60
  • Kiehl's Magic Elixir Scalp and Hair Oil Treatment: $25
  • Bondi Boost HG Shampoo: $29.95
