Expert Astrologer Yana Yanovich Reveals the Biggest Astrological Events of 2022

Wondering what 2022 will have in store for you? So were we, so we turned to an expert for answers.

Yana Yanovich is a Western astrologer with more than 20 years of astrological practice and is also an expert consultant for Nebula: Horoscope & Astrology, a global multifunctional platform for astrology lovers created to inspire people to find their way to happiness. We had the pleasure of being able to ask her what the new year will have in store for us, and she revealed the most significant astrological events of 2022, and what they'll bring to us over the next 12 months.

The General Atmosphere

Yana Yanovich: Both 2020 and 2021 were quite rough and filled with astrological patterns which indicate hectic and turbulent developments. The good news is that 2022 has a much more calm and positive, optimistic vibe in terms of planetary constellations that are going to form in the skies. It is, of course, not without its own bumps in the road, but they aren't anywhere near as serious. The planets which are in focus in 2022 are Jupiter, which rules growth, expansion, new opportunities and learning, and Mars and Venus, the main planets of love and passion, which will be dancing a sort of cosmic tango throughout the year and bringing important events in our relationship and love life. They are the ones I will start my list of events with:

Venus Retrograde: Dec. 19, 2021 to Jan. 29, 2022

YY: 2022 begins in the middle of Venus' retrograde period. The planet of love and romance started moving backward on Dec. 19 2021 and will turn direct on Jan. 29. 2022. The entire retrograde cycle will be happening in Capricorn, an Earth sign which is focused on a practical and pragmatic approach. When a planet is moving backward, its energy is focused inward and is more reflective than active. This period of Venus retrograde urges us to rethink what role relationships play in our lives, how we approach it and whether or not we are being effective in it. Capricorn is concerned with the result, so the ultimate question will be, "Am I really getting somewhere or not?" If not, this is the time to analyze what can be done differently.

Mars and Venus Conjunctions (Feb. 12 and March 12)

YY: With Venus ruling romance and Mars ruling passion, this duo makes for a powerful energetical charge when it joins together in the skies. This will be felt even stronger by those whose chart is activated by either one of these two conjunctions. The first one happens in Capricorn on Feb. 12. The more powerful planet out of the two in this case is Mars, because it's exalted in this particular sign and this makes it stronger, more dominant. So the decisive energy will be prevailing and it will help some of us to finally find the courage to do things we were afraid to do before (ask someone out, move in together or even propose).

The second Venus and Mars contact happens on March 12 in the sign of Aquarius. This is an air sign, so it is more concerned with the idea and intellectual side of things rather than the practical, hands-on side of things. Aquarius is also a sign of progress and an unusual approach, thinking outside of the box. For those of us who feel like they're stuck and can't seem to find a solution for some issues with personal life, this conjunction will give the necessary boost and may bring insight on how to tackle the matter in an unexpected way.

Both of these conjunctions are bringing heightened sensual energy, attraction and magnetism not only on the day but a few days before and after thus making it an excellent time to meet someone new and enter a relationship. It will be much easier to do so with all the romance and passion in the air.

Mars Retrograde (Oct. 30 to Jan. 12, 2023)

YY: The final move of the year in this heated tango of Mars and Venus will be Mars becoming retrograde on Oct. 30 and moving backward all the way until Jan. 12, 2023. Mars retrogrades less often than Mercury or Venus, only once every two years, so its effect will be more noticeable.

In astrology, Mars rules action, passion, enthusiasm, bravery, will and assertion. So while Mars is in retrograde motion it's hard to assert ourselves, there's less passion, and we feel as if we are held back.

Mars also is connected with anger and even aggression and while you are likely to experience less of that from an external source, the anger or aggression could be directed internally, especially because the retrograde is happening in a mental and intellectual sign of Gemini. You might feel like or be prone to self-blaming and going some conversation or situation over and over again thinking "I should have said or done this, why didn't I?"

There is no good coming out of this self-reproach. Don't get stuck on it and try to distract yourself by some intellectual activity like solving puzzles or planning out your upcoming vacation in detail.

4 Mercury Retrograde Cycles (Jan. 14 to Feb. 3, May 10 to June 3, Sep. 9 to Oct. 2 and Dec. 29 to Jan. 18, 2023)

YY: Typically, Mercury moves backward only three times per calendar year, but occasionally it happens four times. 2022 is one of those years. The first three periods carry the energy of the transition of retrograde movement from the element of air to the element of earth. They will start in an air sign and end in an earth sign. There is a repeating theme of taking the ideas and intentions brought to you by the air signs and turning them into something solid and substantial which is what the earth signs are focused on.

The first three periods will be happening during the following dates:

  • Jan. 14 to Feb. 3 in Aquarius and Capricorn
  • May 10 to June 3 in Gemini and Taurus
  • Sep. 9 to Oct. 2 in Libra and Virgo

The last Mercury retrograde period starts on Dec. 29 and mostly will be happening in 2023. Unlike the previous three retrograde periods of the year, this one is entirely in the earth sign of Capricorn, marking the full transition of the retrograde cycle into the grounded, practical and realistic approach the signs of this element display. The focus is going to be on mastery and achievement as well as discipline and organization—all main traits of Capricorn

 Jupiter Transits

YY: 2022 will start with Jupiter freshly back in Pisces as it will re-enter this sign just two days before the beginning of the year. While passing through, it will also make conjunction with Neptune, which happens once every 13 years. Both Neptune and Jupiter are planets connected with ideology, faith and spirituality. They are both associated with cultural matters and this conjunction, which will happen on April 8, 2022, marks the beginning of a period of new ideals, inspirations and cultural themes being developed for the next decade.

While this conjunction sets a trend for something that seems to be quite distant and irrelevant for our everyday lives, in some natal charts it will be a marker of life-changing events. Both planets are strong in the sign of Pisces where the contact is happening and thus show their best side and give the most benefit. The area of life will be defined by the astrological house of the chart of the specific individual but, for example, if you have a Virgo rising sign then Neptune and Jupiter both rule your seventh house of partnership and marriage and will be passing through it as well. This means meeting that special someone and starting a deep, meaningful connection is in store for those who have this planetary activation. For others the new positive development will be connected with career or children or personal growth—the specific individual chart needs to be analyzed here.

In addition, Jupiter will also change signs in 2022, entering Aries on May 10, 2022. This new sign Jupiter will be passing through brings innovative and visionary ideas. During this transit, we can see possibilities to better ourselves that we simply couldn't see before. While Jupiter often encourages us to learn from others, Jupiter in Aries is more about self-teaching and self-learning because Aries gives it this self-starter energy. One shouldn't be afraid to take risks at this time and try new things. Succeeding and failing are both valuable ways of gathering experience, learning and growing. The main point is to at least try.

Since Jupiter rules good luck and Aries is a self-centered sign, when Jupiter passes through Aries we can make our own luck. When we claim the power we have to control the direction of our lives, we become able to discover new opportunities, relationships, solutions and connections that we were not able to access before. Jupiter in Aries urges us to take initiative, expand our potential as individuals, and understand that we each hold the key to our own future. Being proactive and taking the steering wheel is what this energy is all about. Of course, it should not be some mindless courage. This is why learning about the process continues to be important at this time.

Jupiter will stay in Aries until October 28, 2022, when it will retrograde back to Pisces for a while giving us a break and a chance to reflect on all that we have accomplished in those give exciting and adventurous months. It will come back to Aries on December 20, 2022, for another 5 months before proceeding to Taurus.

The Solar and Lunar Eclipses of 2022

YY: There are four eclipses in 2022—two lunar and two solar ones. This is a normal, average amount per year (unlike the six eclipses of 2020) but what is notable about it is that there is a sign shift that happens this year. In the previous two years, the eclipses were happening on the Gemini-Sagittarius axis, bringing focus to information and misinformation, learning, knowledge and separating the truth from lies. With the shift to Taurus and Scorpio a very different theme comes into light—one of sensuality, deep emotions and reconnecting with the physical aspect of life rather than intellectual or informational.

A solar eclipse on April 30 will happen in Taurus and will be followed by a lunar eclipse in Scorpio on May 16. Later on, there is a flip with a solar eclipse in Scorpio on Oct. 25, followed by a lunar eclipse in Taurus on Nov. 8.

Eclipses are always a good time to manifest something very important in our lives and it works even better if the manifestation is connected with the main theme of the zodiac signs involved.

Taurus is often concerned with the material side of things and having or not having something. If this concern is out of control, then there is a risk to lose the ability to enjoy life, to savor the simple pleasures of it and to relish the present moment. In this case, a good thing to do during the eclipses is to immerse in a sensual but simple experience, such as a walk in the park or forest, cooking and eating something delicious, taking a bath and so on. This will help you to set the right energetical impulse to bring the joy of life back to your daily routine.

Scorpio is usually about deep emotional experiences and the downfall is that often things get too complicated, oftentimes unnecessarily so. The activities done during the times of the eclipse should be the same, except the focus should be on the simplicity of things and understanding that peace and calm they bring are not less valuable and enjoyable than the emotional rollercoaster of the drama.

For those people whose natal charts will be activated by the points where the eclipses are happening this advice is doubly important as the cosmos urges them to change, transform and evolve. Following the path of this spiritual and personal growth, they will be able to break destructive emotional cycles they might have been following previously.
