Expert Tells Us How to Cure Dry and Chapped Lips
There's nothing worse than when your lips are chapped.
Whether they're peeling, raw, crusty (we know, ew) or anything in between, it's no walk in the park. After all, chapstick can only do so much, so what are we supposed to do when that just doesn't cut it? We spoke with Susie Wang, founder and expert cosmetic chemist from clean beauty brand, 100% PURE.
Susie gave us the inside scoop on how to cure dry and chapped lips. Keep reading for the full interview!
Sweety High: Are there any at-home remedies you'd recommend to cure dry and chapped lips?
Susie Wang: Exfoliating your lips can help get rid of any flakiness. It will refresh the top layer of skin, giving you soft lips. You can easily create a DIY lip scrub by mixing together coconut oil or olive oil with finely ground sugar. Exfoliating and moisturizing is key!
SH: How often should you apply balm?
SW: I always apply balm throughout my day. I love keeping my lips moisturized and I like the look of slightly dewy lips. A good starting point is applying it in the morning, afternoon and before bed. What hydrates lips the most, however, is your water intake throughout the day.
SH: What weather conditions worsen dry lips?
SW: Dry air can do a lot of things to your skin, including making it feel tighter and drier. Cold weather can also worsen dry lips, as well as exposure to the sun. Heaters and air conditioners are also culprits.
SH: How do you avoid getting dry lips?
SW: Always carry a lip balm in your bag so you can apply whenever your lips are feeling dry. It's better to avoid an issue, rather than treat one. To avoid getting dry lips, avoid lipsticks or any lip product that tends to dry lips out. A lot of conventional matte lipsticks are made with PTFE to repel moisture, which excessively dry your lips. You can also try out different textures and quality of balms that work best for you. We like to add in Vitamin E into our lip balms at 100% PURE because vitamin E is restorative and will help generate new skin cells for softer lips.
SH: How do you keep them constantly moisturized throughout the day and night?
SW: Exfoliate, moisturize with a lip balm throughout the day and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
