First Date Outfit Dos and Don’ts for Girls, According to a Fashion Stylist
Going on a first date is already nerve-racking, and deciding what to wear just makes the whole process even tougher!
If you're planning on going on a first date soon and aren't quite sure what to wear or what's even appropriate, you've come to the right place. We spoke with Beverly, founder and CEO of ProjectBee, her very own image and wardrobe consulting company, and she gave us all the tips. Continue below for our full interview with her, where she goes into all the dos and don'ts of what to wear on a first date!
Sweety High: Tell us about yourself!
Beverly: Hi! I'm Beverly, a native New Yorker but currently living in London! I'm an image and wardrobe consultant and personal shopper. I'm a fashion lover and also a major foodie. You will probably always find me on a plane flying somewhere for work but mostly for pleasure
SH: Do you have any funny first date stories?
Beverly: Too many! The first one that comes to mind is showing up on a date and not being able to find my date because they're a completely different person. The other date, we went to dinner and ended up watching the fireworks after, and I was wearing blush patent pumps in a grass field and my shoes were completely covered in mud at the end of the night, but it was cute because he kept carrying me—so it turned out to be a great date!
SH: What should girls wear on a first date?
Beverly: On the first date you want to keep things fun and playful but also balanced. Less is more! You have to decide the areas you want to highlight. For a dinner date, you can definitely spice things up showing a little décolletage but do a midi-length dress and not a mini. For movie night, I would go with a great pair of jeans and a fun blouse. This is where you want to play around with a bold color with your top. Have your look work for you. For a more casual date, I will go with a sneaker and a dress look. For the sneakers, I will either do a classic white tennis sneaker or a fun golden goose sneaker.
SH: What should girls avoid wearing on a first date?
Beverly: I would avoid showing too much skin. You never want to give it all away on the first. You're sexier when you're a mystery. Also being comfortable is key!
SH: What about jewelry and accessories?
Beverly: I love mixing jewelry. Stacking on a couple of dainty layered necklaces, an anklet and stacked rings can really elevate your look. If you're going for a more statement piece of jewelry, have that be the focal point. For accessories, I love wrapping a small silk scarf around my ponytail for a pop of color or completely mixing it up and doing a classy crystal brooch with a blazer and a distressed vintage tee. For my bag game, I usually pair the look with a mini purse that fits just my credit card, lipstick and my flip phone.
SH: How should girls style hair and makeup?
Beverly: Keep your makeup fresh and clean. A dewy look with a bold lip is always a great idea. For hair, any style can work as long as it looks neat and tame!
SH: Is a fresh mani-pedi a must?
Beverly: Definitely! Going on a date with chipped nails is like your date showing up without wearing deodorant. Even if you're in a rush, keep the color neutral or go for a clear polish. Remember, first impressions are everything.
SH: Anything else we should know?
Beverly: Remember to have fun and wear what makes you feel good!
