Gabi Sklar Finds Closure in the Aftermath of a Breakup on New Single ‘Youniverse’
Some very big things are coming from indie pop singer-songwriter Gabi Sklar in 2024—including a new EP—and she just added even more to its rich narrative with the release of her new single, "Youniverse."
Working hand in hand with another EP track, "Back to Earth," "Youniverse" tells a tale of just how painful love can be, feeling like there are worlds between you and someone else, even when you're right next to each other. At the same time, this crooning, retro-pop track is a spacey tale of self-discovery and making peace with heartbreak, brought to life with Gabi's truly out-of-this-world vocals. We loved it from first listen, and Gabi was kind enough to chat with us and tell us all about its inspiration and what's next in the interview below.
The Story Behind 'Youniverse'
Gabi Sklar: "Youniverse" is a sister track to another song on the EP, "Back To Earth." They both explore the idea of love, loss and the grief that comes with the distance. The main difference between the two is the sense of closure (as much as that possibly can be) behind the idea of losing someone.

What 'Youniverse' Means
GS: I took the sentiment, "it's their world, we're just living in it" and felt the level of narcissism was more severe than that. "World" just didn't cut it—it had to be their entire you-niverse.
Gabi's Favorite Lyric
GS: "You were my world, felt so infinite; You're world, I was just in it." I love how poetic and real it felt but also how it emphasized how one-sided things were.
On Moving Into 2024
GS: "Youniverse" felt like the perfect introduction to a way larger project. It feels like musically, we are now entering another era or "world" in my artistry.
On 'Youniverse' and Her Upcoming EP
GS: In one way, it feels like the beginning to a larger story but also has this unresolved feeling like you want to know what happens next. The EP dives into different layers of this period in my life.

On Her Musical Growth
GS: Last year, I started releasing singles and continued to build a beautiful fanbase online. This year, I'm releasing an entire project that explains what I'm about with more context while bringing these songs from online to a live stage.

What's Next
GB: More shows! (A lot) more music!
Final Thoughts
GS: It's just the beginning! If you like "Youniverse," you'll love the EP that much more.
