Gillian Heidi Explores Relationships and Insecurity in New Single ‘Wonderin’, Feat. Michael Christmas

Have you ever been unsure about a relationship, without knowing why? Chances are that you'll relate to Gillian Heidi's great new track, "Wonderin'."

The 16-year-old singer-songwriter's latest single is out today, Oct. 30. Also featuring rapper Michael Christmas, it tells the story of a relationship from two different, but equally valid, perspectives, and we can't stop listening.

Eager to find out more about the track, we reached out to Gillian herself, who filled us in on its creation and her upcoming 3AM album, set to release early next year. Listen HERE, and keep reading to find out what she had to say.

Sweety High: What was the songwriting process behind "Wonderin'"?

Gillian Heidi: "Wonderin'" was one of the songs that took me the least amount of time to write. I was very passionate about the song and what it was about, and I was able to write a rough demo within 20 minutes. I got the inspiration for the song while I was at school, during my free block, so I had to frantically type out the lyrics!

SH: Is the song based on a real experience? What kind of emotions did you want to channel into this song?

GH: "Wonderin'" is definitely based on a real experience. The song is all about feeling insecure and unsure in a relationship. I really wanted to channel the feeling of everything in a relationship going well but still feeling uneasy for no real reason. I think that has been an emotion that's plagued me a lot in relationships and "Wonderin'" really encompasses it.

SH: Do you have any advice for women who think their partners might not be faithful to them?

GH: First things first, communicate! Communication and trust in your partner solves 90% of problems. However, if you find out that a partner is unfaithful, leave them! Do not waste your time with someone who doesn't know how amazing you really are!

SH: What was it like to collaborate with Michael Christmas? What does he uniquely lend to the track?

GH: It was absolutely incredible! I've actually been a fan of Michael Christmas for quite a while, so I was thrilled when I got the opportunity to work with him. He's such a great guy and he adds a really interesting element to the song. In the song, Michael takes on the perspective of the guy in the relationship who is sort of nonchalant and unbothered. He added a completely new aspect to the song. He is so unbelievably talented!

SH: How has the pandemic changed the way you make music, if at all? Has it been a challenge?

GH: The pandemic has definitely given me a lot of free time to work on music, which has been really beneficial. I've had time to fine-tune and improve my writing, and I can't wait to keep making music. Sadly, I haven't been able to do any recording since the beginning of the pandemic, but I hope to be back in the studio soon.

SH: Are there any artists that are particularly inspiring you during these unusual times?

GH: Throughout the pandemic I have been absolutely addicted to Taylor Swift. I've loved Taylor ever since I was little, but throughout the pandemic I've been listening to her on repeat. Not only do I love just listening to her music, but I also feel like listening to her really inspires me and helps me to improve my own songwriting.

SH: Is there anything you can tease about 3AM?

GH: 3AM is a mysterious, unique, dark story. Whenever I listen to the album, I always feel as though I've been taken on a journey. I absolutely love the album, and I can't wait to share it. My favorite part of the album is the last few songs—they are a perfect ending.
