Girl Power Movie Characters: Best Of 2014!
It's 2014, and girl power is currently dominating the box office! In honor of our favorite female movie characters, we've compiled a list of a few of our favorite girl power movie characters of the year!
Wyldstyle (AKA Lucy)
The Lego Movie, which released in February, was a surprise hit with audiences of all ages, and one of the reasons we loved it was a vivacious female LEGO lady by the name of Wyldstyle!
Wyldstyle, voiced by Elizabeth Banks, is tough, independent and extremely creative as a Master Builder who can deconstruct the LEGO world around her and rebuild the pieces into whatever the moment makes necessary!
When she stumbles upon the lead character Emmet and believes he's "the Special," destined to save the LEGO universe, she takes it upon herself to empower him and help unlock his potential!
It's Wyldstyle's belief in Emmet that eventually helps him be who he was meant to be.
Along the way, she also overcomes her own insecurities, dropping the silly nickname and going back to her real name, Lucy. She even breaks up with Batman to follow her heart!
Even if she's made of plastic, Wyldstyle is a powerful young woman that any girl could aspire to be!
Tris (AKA Beatrice Prior)
The long-awaited film adaptation of Divergent hit screens in April, immediately propelling actress Shailene Woodley to stardom as the leading lady, Tris.
In the world of Divergent, society is divided into five factions. Tris, born Beatrice Prior, comes from the selfless Abnegation faction, but she never feels as if she belongs there.
When she takes an aptitude test that's meant to tell her where she belongs, the test doesn't work. It turns out that Beatice is actually Divergent, meaning she doesn't belong to any single faction. She must keep this a secret or her life might be jeopardized.
Knowing she doesn't belong to any faction, she decides to join Dauntless, where she changes her name to Tris. In Dauntless, Tris will have to take on all of her darkest fears as she keeps her divergence a secret.
As Tris learns more about what being Divergent really means, she uncovers a plot to brainwash the Dauntless through mind control, and with help from fellow Divergent, Four, she decides to take on the devious Erudite faction and begin a rebellion!
Throughout the film, not only does Tris confront her fears head-on, but she takes charge when she sees an injustice in her world. If we lived in a dystopia like that, we could only hope we could be that courageous!
Black Widow (Natalia Romanova)
Scarlett Johansson first appeared as Black Widow in a minor Iron Man 2 role in 2010, but with The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the mysterious heroine has become a top Marvel hero with prospects of her own movie!
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which released in April, Black Widow appears in her biggest role yet. Even though she gets second billing to Captain America, throughout the movie she manages to demonstrate her power as a highly trained super spy who can hold her own even against the toughest of baddies!
Black Widow is no longer the sidekick. She's a teammate and equal of Captain America, who can pack just as big of a punch. And we really love that she's a hero rather than a damsel in distress, and she isn't there just to be Captain America's love interest.
Throughout the movie she must also wrestle with her dubious past, but she's willing to sacrifice her own secrets to beat the bad guy, and even after she gets shot in the shoulder she still manages to kick butt!
Best of all, Marvel is considering giving Black Widow her own movie. It's about time a superhero film focused on a girl power hero!
Maleficent
The famous Sleeping Beauty story got a redo with the release of the Maleficent film in May, rewriting the history of the character and doing some work to change her wicked reputation!
Maleficent begins the film as a powerful fairy, complete with a set of gorgeous wings. She lives in a magical realm between the kingdom of the humans and that of the animals, and befriends and falls in love with a boy named Stefan.
Stefan dreams of one day becoming the king, and betrays Maleficent, destroying her wings, in order to secure his place in the kingdom.
Feeling deceived, Maleficent becomes cruel and makes herself the queen of the Moors.
When King Stefan has a baby daughter named Aurora, Maleficent shows up at the baby's christening and curses her, so that on her 16th birthday she will fall under a sleeping curse.
Throughout Aurora's life, Maleficent keeps watch over her. But soon, Maleficent begins to feel motherly toward Aurora, and when Aurora finally meets Maleficent, she believes the fairy is her fairy godmother.
It's then up to Maleficent to stop her own curse from plaguing Aurora, and protecting the princess who might hold the key to reuniting the animal and human kingdoms!
Maleficent is full of girl power not only in its story of redemption, but also in the amazing relationship that develops between Maleficent and Princess Aurora. Both characters are powerful but flawed, and of course Angelina Jolie is flawless in the movie! Plus, the movie did a great job at the box office!
