Korean Artist HEYOON Discusses Her ‘Pivot’ to a Solo Career and New Single

by Tayah Fox

On Nov. 13, Korean singer, dancer and choreographer HEYOON joined forces with American rapper Armani White for the R&B single "Pivot."

This track marks the beginning of HEYOON's journey as a soloist after departing from the group Now United in 2023, illustrating the challenges one faces in a toxic relationship. HEYOON emphasizes the fear and uncertainty someone feels when faced with two choices: leave the relationship they've invested time into or stay, knowing they'll never be treated properly. With these choices, a journey of self-love begins as they break loose from the manipulative cycle of toxicity. Sweety High chatted with HEYOON to dive deeper into her storytelling with "Pivot," her new solo career and plans for 2025. Read the interview below.

Sweety High: "Pivot" is your debut solo single. How does this single serve as an introduction to HEYOON as a solo artist?

HEYOON: "Pivot" is a statement piece. The soft R&B vocals and Afrobeat-inspired rhythm felt like a good balance to introduce my sound to the fans. I'm also going through such a pivotal moment in my life right now, so it felt just right!

SH: Armani White is a featured artist on "Pivot." How did this collaboration come about? How was it working on the track with him?

HEYOON: I got to see Armani perform in Korea & hang out—I've always been a fan of his music, but his performance inspired me and in person. He's sweet and humble, so we instantly became friends. I was listening to "Pivot" one day and just texted him to ask if he'd be down to be on the second verse; I knew he would make my debut single even more special.

SH: "Pivot" focuses on heavy topics like toxic relationships. Can you give us insight on why you chose to depict such a heavy topic with a laid-back sound?

HEYOON: I think it's something we all go through. It's about setting boundaries and choosing yourself. I naturally gravitated towards the laid-back sound because it's important to accept what's happening and keep a healthy mindset even more in tough times.

SH: How would you describe your musical style?

HEYOON: I would say a mix of softness and rhythm. I grew up listening to a lot of R&B/soul and have been a dancer my whole life. I can't wait to share more music with the fans.

SH: The music video for "Pivot" came together through a female-led creative team. Why is this important to you as a woman in the music industry?

HEYOON: I care so much about building a healthy community. I have many inspiring women in my life who keep me sane and shape me. I also wanted to create a safe environment for the music video, with specific scenes I had in mind. I'm so grateful I got to work with such an amazing director like Nayeon.

SH: What made you decide that now is the perfect time to become a solo artist?

HEYOON: My intuition! I finally felt calm. I didn't feel like I was chasing anything or in a rush. I also met the amazing team I have now, which gave me so much confidence to hit go!

SH: Transitioning from a group to a solo artist can prompt some struggles. Can you tell us about any struggles you've experienced while adjusting to your new career path and how you overcame them?

HEYOON: It's just very different. I think it balances off because I have things I couldn't do while in a group creatively that I get to do now. I miss sharing the same experience with 10-plus members I love. It's all-natural, and I think acceptance and focusing on the amazing things happening before me are most important.
