6 Holiday Date Ideas That Are So Basic, But So Necessary

If there's one season when it's totally okay to embrace all your basic, it's Christmastime.

The rest of the year can be focused on originality and unique ideas, but Christmas is all about tradition. And that strict adherence to doing things the customary way also extends to your dating life. After all, what's the point of even having an S.O. if you can't force them to do all kinds of cheesy holiday activities with you?

So in the interest of observing tradition, keep scrolling for six holiday date ideas that are so basic, but so necessary.

1. Ice Skating

Unsurprisingly, ice skating sits at the top of our list. Whether you're a pro or a beginner, there's something so sweet about gliding (or stumbling) across the ice hand-in-hand with your S.O. You can build trust as you struggle to keep each other from falling and obviously snap a few pics for the 'gram while you're at it.

2. Sledding

For those of us who live in the warmer areas of the nation, sledding during Christmastime isn't even an option. That means, if you're lucky enough to live in a place blessed with tons of snow, you better take advantage of it. Get back to the simplistic fun of childhood by going on a sledding date with your S.O. It's easy, cheap and guaranteed to give you an afternoon filled with laughs—what's not to love?

3. A Holiday Movie Marathon

We only get a very limited time in the year when it's okay to watch all our of fave Christmas classics, so why not do it with your S.O? Pick 2-3 movies you both enjoy, whip up some steaming cups of hot cocoa, settle in with some fuzzy blankets and just enjoy each other's company while you partake in some holiday movie magic.

4. Christmas Lights

Christmas lights are pure magic—that's just a fact. Every city across the nation has a shopping center/neighborhood/zoo/etc. known for its impressive light display. Take time to enjoy the illumination of the season with your S.O. Pile on your warmest winter clothes and plan a night to go check out all the lights. It will give you a chance to just spend time together and talk, but you'll get to look at gorgeous light displays while you do it.

5. Gingerbread House Decoration

Gingerbread houses are inherently frustrating, which means you should always build them with someone you're comfortable with. You and your S.O. can struggle to make all the pieces fit together and laugh about the fact that your creation will likely end up looking nothing like the box. Best case, you'll have a totally Instagrammable holiday treat. Worst case, you can at least eat all the candy and start your holiday sugar rush early.

6. Christmas Present Shopping

Holiday shopping can be really stressful, but turning it into a fun day spent with your S.O. can help relieve some of the pressure. Head to a busy shopping center and start with a nice lunch or dinner. Then allow yourselves to casually walk through the stores, searching for the perfect gift for everyone on your list. You might not find everything you need, but having some help while you brainstorm gift ideas will make the entire experience much more enjoyable.
