I Hate Country Music, But Here’s How I Became Obsessed With Kacey Musgraves

Country music—say what you will, but I personally don't find it all too appealing.

Sure, I can jam out to a classic Rascal Flatts song or even sing along to some OG Taylor Swift lyrics, but for the most part, I despise country music. The aggressive, exaggerated twang and the general lack of meaning in a lot of the country songs I've heard, have ultimately turned me away from the genre.

So, last week when my boyfriend suggested we watch The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show, I was less than thrilled. But, being the perfect, amazing, magnificent girlfriend I am, I reluctantly agreed to watch the Christmas special.

You have to understand—prior to this, I hadn't heard one single song by Kacey Musgraves. However, within the first 10 minutes of the viewing, I was hooked and was slowly but surely becoming her newest fan.

The narrator of the show, Dan Levy, is one of my all-time favorite actors, so once he made an appearance on stage, I thought to myself, This Kacey girl must be pretty cool if she can convince Dan to come on her show. The celebrity guests didn't end there. Some (just some) of her special guests included: Lana Del Rey, Camila Cabello, Kendall Jenner and Troye Sivan.

Not only was the show jam-packed with some of the most well-known celebs out there, but the music itself was incredible. Some of the songs were funny (the opener with James Corden), while others were sad (my new fave song, Christmas Makes Me Cry).

Once the show ended, we immediately took to Spotify and played the album on repeat. Since my original viewing, I've been nonstop listening to her album. Like seriously, I don't even remember the last time I listened to something else. Do I have a problem? Perhaps. But do I plan on fixing it? Nope.

If you're anything like me and think there's not enough room left in your dark, dark soul for a bit of country, I beg you to reconsider. And Kacey, if you're reading this, I'm sorry I ever doubted you.

While I'm still by no means a fan of country music and all it has to offer, I am Kacey Musgrave's newest fan girl.
