How to Be Less Afraid of Horror Movies
We aren't naturally horror film lovers. However, we love their aesthetics and appreciate them from a purely creative standpoint. So, we put in the work to finally be in a mental space where we could enjoy them.
If you're like us, keep scrolling. We have five easy ways to introduce scary movies into your life without intense and unsettling anxiety.
Rationalize
First and foremost, try to rationalize what's happening. We tend to become very immersed in any movie we watch and have to remind ourselves that we don't exist inside the screen. It's much easier to observe what's going on when you don't feel the character's stress. If you still struggle with this, we recommend searching for the film's behind-the-scenes content to humanize the experience.

Read the Synopsis First
One of the primary sources of our anxiety was the unexpected nature. More than likely, the film will have a decently good and resolved ending, but it instantly leaves our minds as the scene becomes more suspenseful. And we still wonder, "Will it get worse before it gets better?" When we research the plot, we know exactly what to expect and can anticipate the "scary" parts and the resolution.

Consume Something Positive Afterwards
With a sensitive brain, you want to avoid watching a horror movie before bed or an important event. The nervousness can linger for hours or even days, especially if it's the last thing on your mind. Instead, finish your day with something that makes you feel good—it's almost like a reset for your mental health.
Watch With Friends
We always watch horror movies with friends. Never underestimate the comfort of having someone next to you. Watching alone can bring unnecessary paranoia and make you feel extremely vulnerable.

Slowly Introduce More Intense Films
As you get better at handling your fear, you can begin to watch more intense movies. Right now, you might only be able to watch Haunted Mansion or M3GAN. Remember, it's a sprint, not a race. You can slowly add something like Get Out before graduating to a really scary film like The Exorcist.
