How to Stop Being on the Sidelines and Be the Main Character of Your Life

Ever since I was a kid, I've been incredibly observant and constantly in awe of others.

I always seemed more fascinated with other people's lives and what they had versus living my own. In the second grade, I had the most beautiful teacher and I would copy everything she did, hoping to transform myself into an equally beautiful adult. I did end up being considerably attractive, whether you call it good genes or blinking at the same time my teacher blinked—regardless, it worked.

Despite my excellent observation skills making me a better writer, they have (and still do) affect my mental health. This relentless habit of people-watching and scrolling through countless IG feeds often sends me spiraling down the rabbit hole of comparison, leaving me swimming in a sea of self-doubt and negative self-talk. 2023 was the year I made a promise to myself to stop feeling like I am living on the sidelines and take the bull by the horns to become the one who is fawned over, even if that meant showering myself with self-adoration in solitary splendor. Here's what I learned—and my biggest tips to get you feeling like the main character of your own life, with some research-backed evidence of pop culture icons that definitely fit the bill.

Comparison Is the Thief of Joy

If you are going to read any of this article, read this, and then reread it again! When you find yourself constantly comparing yourself to others, whether outright or just subconsciously, you start to believe the negative self-talk that goes hand-in-hand with it. When this inevitably comes up for you, remember your worth and potential. Things always seem cooler than they are. It's all about branding, people!

Get to Know Yourself

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you're constantly comparing yourself to others, it's essential to reflect on your desires. Take a moment to consider whether your pursuits derive from genuine personal interests and aspirations or if you're merely seeking validation from others by pursuing things that may appear impressive or trendy. Do things because you want them, and if you're unsure of your desires, take some time to explore and discover them. Remember, there is no shame in trial and error.

Embrace the Cringe

When you finally start living your most authentic, baddest life, there will be times when you start getting in your head about how people perceive you. This is normal, and confidence in how you present yourself will come with time. To be candid, I don't think anyone ever gets out of their own head completely. Even the most confident people have their off days.

Have No Doubts

Piggy-backing off of embracing your truest, cringiest self—don't ever doubt yourself. Trust your gut and don't rely on other people's approval or opinion to decide if something is cool or not. Have faith and confidence in what you bring to the table, and own it.
