How to Befriend Your Opposite Sign, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

Whether you've got your whole birth chart memorized or only know your sun sign because your friends keep reminding you, you can learn a lot about yourself based on astrology.

Your zodiac sign is like the universe's personality quiz—it tells you some base-level things about the ways you interact with the world around you, but without truly defining who you are. It says a lot about the types of people you get along with, too, as you've no doubt heard about certain signs being more "compatible" with each other than others. This is great, but what happens when you meet someone—in this case, a potential new friend—who happens to be your total opposite? Good news: your opposite sign does not equal your astrological enemy, or even your least compatible friend! Confused? Don't worry. We're here to provide you with some tips on how to befriend your opposite sign, based on your own.

Aries (March 21-April 19) & Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 22)

Bold, fiery Aries and romantic, often indecisive Libra sound like a match that's doomed from the beginning, but you'd be surprised. Aries love to be in charge, while Libras enjoy being more of a peacemaker who's along for the ride.

• If you're an Aries, communication is key when getting along with a Libra to ensure smooth sailing. If you check in with them, ask them what they want to do or if they have an opinion on something and generally try not to just take over all control, you'll strike the perfect balance in your friendship.
• If you're the loving Libra of the pair, don't be afraid to speak up when you do have a preference (even if it's just on where to get brunch). Be sure to give your Aries friend space to discuss their feelings and emotions as well before they simply act on them and think later.

Taurus (April 20-May 20) & Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Taurus, like Libra, is ruled by Venus—the planet that loves to enjoy all things indulgent. Scorpio, on the other hand, is ruled by Pluto, which is why this sign often gets a bad reputation for being moody, cold and even manipulative. However, in terms of the partnership, these two make perfect pals thanks to their ability to help the other shrug off the negative attributes of their own sign in order to develop into a more well-rounded individual.

• If you're a Taurus, don't fault your Scorpio friend for scoffing at the things you enjoy at first (so long as they aren't being downright rude about it). Instead, help them to understand why you enjoy these things and show them that a bit of stability in life is actually a good thing.

When it comes to friendship, there's no pairing of signs quite as chaotic as Gemini and Sagittarius. Both are known for their sense of curiosity and general lust for life, making them the set of friends who have a hard time saying no to almost any plans.

• If you're a Cancer, don't let your Capricorn friend's hard exterior deter you from getting to know them on a deeper level. Learn more about their goals and aspirations, then use your incredible intuition to help them achieve that.
• If you're a Capricorn, let your walls down when you can around your Cancer friend. They want to be the person you call when you need to talk to someone openly, even if you don't know that's what you need.

 

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) & Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is one of the most magnetic pairings there is, thanks mainly to Leo's star-of-the-show charisma combined with the curious nature of mysterious Aquarius. Intellect is huge for both, so there's no doubt that the conversations that this friendship is founded on will be some of the most interesting you've ever had.

• If you're a Leo, try not to take over with your main character energy all the time. Shine a light on your Aquarius friend as often as possible, especially when it comes to their intellect and/or artistic abilities.
