Your Step-By-Step Guide to Building a Capsule Wardrobe

The idea of a capsule wardrobe has been around for decades, but it wasn't until just recently that it took off on TikTok.

Instead of filling your closet with trendy pieces that will go out of style in a few years, a capsule wardrobe is meant to be timeless. Pieces are meant to complement one another and are made up of mostly neutral hues. Not only will you save money in the long run, but choosing outfits to wear will become easier than ever. Plus, it's sustainable and is stress-free! Continue below to find out how to build a capsule wardrobe for yourself.

Empty Out Your Closet

The first thing you need to do in order to build out a capsule wardrobe is to empty out your closet. Go through your items in sections, for example, shirts, jackets, shoes, etc. Look at each item and if you haven't worn it in a long time, it might be time to let it go.

If you have a lot of similar items, like three black leather jackets, you only need one. Continue to go through your closet and keep this same thing in mind! Additionally, since a capsule wardrobe is meant to be timeless, get rid of any super trendy pieces.

Build a Winter Capsule

When it comes to a winter capsule, there are certain items you want to be sure to have. Some people follow the Project 333 rule (33 items for each season) while others do their own thing. For the winter, we suggest at least having a turtleneck, long sleeve, sweater, pants, jeans (light and dark), coat, scarf, gloves, hat, walking shoes, nice shoes, a purse and everyday jewelry. The amount of each you choose is entirely up to you, but we suggest not going above four.

Build a Spring Capsule

A spring capsule will include some of the same types of items from your winter capsule. Also, we like to stick with lighter colors, like nudes, browns, greens and yellows! For the spring, we recommend having your capsule consist of a crop top, button-up, sweater, denim jacket, shorts, pants, short dress, midi dress, maxi dress, hat, walking shoes, nice shoes, sandals, a purse and everyday jewelry. Again, try not to have too many of the same type of item—for example, if you love crop tops, you don't need 10 of them in all of the same colors. Limit your options to the ones you find yourself reaching for all the time.

Build a Summer Capsule

Summer capsules are always fun to build and just might be our favorite! For the summer, we propose your capsule should include a swimsuit, floral dress, plain dress, crop top, shorts, jeans, hat, walking shoes, heeled sandals, slides, a purse and everyday jewelry. When it comes to the summer, remember you'll be out in the sun, perhaps even going on daily walks or hikes. Stay away from dark colors and stick with things like graphic tees, biker shorts and a light jacket.

Build a Fall Capsule

Last but not least is your fall capsule collection. When it comes to the fall months, you'll be wearing more layers, so think of items that can easily be layered. For the fall, we encourage building a capsule with tees, a long sleeve, sweater, button-up, blouse, jacket, dresses, pants, dark jeans, boots, walking shoes, nice shoes, a purse and everyday jewelry.
