How to Enjoy a Super Bowl Party If You Don’t Care About Football

is right around the corner, with the big game on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

While many of us have plans to attend Super Bowl parties, spending time with friends and family to commemorate the biggest U.S. sporting event of the year, not all of us actually care at all about football. Maybe you're more into other games with less starting and stopping and more frequent scoring, or maybe, you're not big on sports to begin with. Regardless, the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles is set to begin at about 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, and if you're going to be there, you might as well make the most of it. Below, we have our top tips for enjoying the big game (whether or not you actually enjoy the game).

Feast on the Classic Super Bowl Foods

If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that game day foods hit the spot. Between chips and luscious dips, spicy wings, pizza, sliders, potato skins and so much more, some of our all-time favorite eats have a natural association with Super Bowl parties. Communicate with whoever's holding the party to see if you can make it a potluck where everyone can bring a favorite recipe. Then, you can focus on whipping up something everyone will drool over, emphasizing the social and culinary aspect of the party over the actual football.

Check in on the Puppy Bowl

One of our favorite things about Super Bowl day has to be the Puppy Bowl, which premieres ahead of the game at 1 p.m. ET/ 10 a.m. PT. This humorous and cuddly event features 142 adoptable puppies as "players," pitting Team Ruff against Team Fluff, putting us all in a warm and fuzzy mood before we swap channels to watch football. It even features its own halftime show starring kittens (also adoptable!).

Learn the Game

Is one of the reasons you find football so boring that you don't actually know the rules? We don't want to give you a homework assignment, but understanding the game will enhance your enjoyment. You don't have to make the learning process very academic, either. We suggest spending time with two people at the party who are equally passionate about football, but rooting for different sides. Have them not just explain how everything works, but make a case for their team and what makes their players special. That way, you'll be clued in whenever something exciting happens, and offer both congratulations and commiserations with every point scored.

Look Forward to the Ads

Football is infamous for its frequent ad breaks, but that's actually a benefit when you're more interested in the commercials than the game, and Super Bowl ads are some of the best of the whole year. After all, ad placements during the Super Bowl are famously expensive and coveted, so any companies who utilize that time go all out to make sure that time counts. Expect everything from hilarious and creative campaigns to annoying and bizarre ones. Either way, you know you'll be entertained when the players aren't on screen.

Sing Along With the Halftime Show

Every year, the Super Bowl's halftime show draws in more viewers than the game itself, and for good reason. The halftime show highlights the biggest musical artists in the world, putting them center stage and giving them everything they need to put on a production people will talk about for years. 2025 will see rap sensation Kendrick Lamar returning to the Super Bowl halftime show for the second time, following his debut in 2022, joined by special guest performer SZA.

Spend Time With People You Care About

Chances are that if you don't like football but go to the Super Bowl party anyway, it's to be around people you care about, so make the most of that experience. Rather than sitting front and center on the couch, we suggest placing yourself more on the periphery of the event, so you can watch the game when you want, but also mingle with people and enjoy food to take in the full experience. When the football fans get excited about something, you can be excited for them, and you can also probably find a soul or two in attendance who are equally disinterested in football to bond with.
