Get Sunday Scaries? Here’s How to Tell If It’s You or the Job

Despite how incredible your job is, or contrarily, how painfully long your Monday through Friday can feel, we almost all inevitably dread the start of a new week.

Sunday Scaries seem to just be a part of life. After a fun weekend, the last thing you want is to talk to your co-workers about what you brought for lunch or be in a Zoom meeting making small talk about how up-and-down the weather has been these last few days. But don't fret. Here are some ways to figure out whether it's something that you may need to work through internally or if it's time to set some emotional boundaries with your job.

Questions To Ask Yourself

Before we provide you with a listicle, first ask yourself these three questions. Am I where I want to be? Is my Monday through Friday fulfilling me? Am I living for the weekend? If you answered no to any of the previous, odds are, your job is not lighting you up the way it may have in the past.

Nothing Can Be 100%

Although it may sound like the next step is to get rid of your job altogether, live off the grid and build a farm with horses and spend your days picking berries, most of us don't have the privilege of dropping everything and living our most perfect, non-intrusive life. Suppose you are in a situation where you don't have the financial capability to leave your job, despite it disrupting your inner peace. In that case, you especially need to find a happy medium where you can do what you need to do Monday through Friday but not carry your work back home with you, further disrupting your Sunday and resulting in Sunday Scaries.

Work-Life Balance

There is nothing more important than having a work-life balance. Whether you love your job or you're not where you want to be career-wise, you need to create emotional boundaries to separate your life from any issues or exciting things happening back at work. Don't allow your job to be your everything. If you come home after a long day, ruminating about the things that happened at work and don't allow any time to decompress, suddenly, work starts to take over all aspects of your life. Use your weekends to take space from your job and fulfill your passions. Start looking forward to the things that light you up and bring you joy. Use your 5-to-9 to catch up with friends, work on a creative project or sit in front of your TV with your favorite ice cream! Whatever you choose, allow it to be a time you look forward to, and watch your Sunday Scaries suddenly start to melt away.
