How to Know If You’re Wearing the Right Bra Size

It's been said that the most challenging piece of clothing to shop for is the right bra.

While many could argue there are far more difficult things to shop for (hello swimsuits and jeans), many people don't realize that they're actually wearing the wrong size bra, which can effect comfort and appearance. Additionally, when you do find a bra you love–even if it's the wrong size–many people, us included, are guilty of wearing their bras to the death.

Anyone who has found "The One" knows how essential the right bra is to looking and feeling great, so we've gathered some useful tips to ensure you're wearing the right bra size.

How to Find Your Right Bra Size

With a tape measure, place it behind your back and measure how many inches you are underneath your breasts, where the bottom of your bra would be (example: 34 inches, which will be the band size you buy). Then, measure again at the fullest part of your breast. This should be comfortable, not tight or loose (example: 37 inches). Take the second measurement and divide by the first measurement to get your cup size (example: 37-34 = 3). An A cup size starts at one inch, and every inch after is a size up (2 inches = B cup, 3 inches = C cup, 4 inches = D cup).

Here are some other ways to make sure you're wearing the right bra.

1. The Band Sits Level

The band of your bra should sit evenly all the way around your ribcage and back without riding up in any areas or squeezing, which can happen around the back or armpit area.

2. The Center of the Bra Lays Completely Flat

The center of the bra is called the gore, and it should lay flat against the breastbone.

3. The Straps Fit Snuggly

Your straps shouldn't fit too tight, but also shouldn't fall down or slip off constantly either. Indentations or tired shoulders is a sign that your straps are too tight.

4. Your Cups Don't Gap

Gapping cups is a surefire sign you're either wearing the wrong size or your bra is too old and stretched out.

5. It Passes The 'Raise Your Arms Test'

If you can raise your arms and the bra says in place without any spillage, you've found yourself a winner!
