How to Keep Your Hair Healthy This Summer

The days are longer, the air is warmer and there's no homework to be worrying about for months to come. That's right—summer is here, whether you're ready or not.

While we can only hope that you got your SPF situation sorted out in advance, there's more to consider this summer than just your skin. We're talking about the health of your hair, which can fall victim to damage from the harsh sun, heat, humidity and other not-so-fun factors that come alongside one of our favorite seasons. Thankfully, there are plenty of things you can do to keep your hair in good shape both now and well into the fall (and beyond). So before you wreak further havoc on your hair this summer, check out our tips on keeping it healthy both inside and out.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Much like your skin, your hair craves moisture to maintain its overall health—and that health is reflected in its general texture and shine. While drinking water is key to achieving good internal levels of hydration, you'll need to do a little more to get that for your hair as well. This comes mainly from the products you use, but not all "hydrating" claims are created equal. Invest in products that truly nourish your strands with powerful ingredients, including ones like:

  • Soapbox's Argan Oil Anti-Frizz Shampoo: $23.97 for 3
  • Better Natured's radically restorative Moisture Replenishing Masque: $22
  • Vegamour's multitasking HYDR-8 Leave-in Conditioner: $34
  • Amika's Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Leave-In Conditioner: $26.60

Protect Against Heat

If you aren't already using a heat-protecting product on your hair when you use hot tools (AKA your flat iron, curling iron or even your hair dryer), please let this be your sign to start. Your hair is dealing with enough exposure to heat over the summer that the last thing it needs is even more direct heat contact, so try to cut down on it by using multitasking hot tools (a few of our favorites come from TYME, $22+) and by using products that protect against heat damage.

Get a Frizz-Free Finish

If there's one thing that can ruin your good time this summer, it's frizz. Unfortunately, it's tough to avoid due to the presence of so much humidity in the air. It can be done, but it will take some powerful products to stop frizz in its tracks and keep your hair looking the way you like. If you're new to the frizz-fighting game, try Color Wow's beloved Dream Coat Supernatural Spray ($28), which repels humidity and helps you get that gorgeous "glass hair" you've always wanted.

Embrace Sun-Blocking Accessories

Hats are your new best friend this summer, and not just for their ability to upgrade your outfit. The right hat can prevent your skin and your scalp from burning, and it can even help stop those UV rays from lightening your hair when you don't want them to do so. Plus, with so many cute hats to choose from, you just can't go wrong. Just try to give your scalp a break throughout the day to avoid too much breakage.

Avoid Overwashing

Summer sweating is super common, and that can wreak havoc on a good hairdo. However, washing your hair daily isn't so good for your hair health.  If you struggle with strands or a scalp that feel greasy, you may be tempted to continue washing your hair every single day, but avoid this if you can. Overwashing can lead to stripping necessary nutrients from your hair, impacting its health and hydration. Instead, pick up a good dry shampoo to help keep your looking clean and stylish in between washes.
