Want to Step Up Your Fitness Game in the New Year? Here Are Some Tips

One of the most common New Year resolutions people make is to live a healthier, more fit lifestyle.

If you happen to fit into that category, you've come to the right place. Instead of losing momentum and eventually falling back into your old ways, this is the year where you will step up your fitness game for the better! Not sure where to even begin? Look below for some tips on improving your health, workout and overall fitness goals in the new year.

Write Out Your Goals

Are you trying to shed a few pounds? Tone your muscles? Keep your heart healthy? Walk 10,000 steps a day? The first step to your fitness journey needs to be clear, so get a pen and paper and literally write out your goals. And no, they don't need to be ridiculous. It can be something as simple as "take a five-minute walk every day" or "do wall sits every morning." No goal is too small or too big, so choose something that feels comfortable to you. Plus, you can always alter things later on, so don't feel like you're stuck with it!

Invest In a Fitness Tracker

Products like a Fitbit tracker ($99.95) will seriously change your fitness game. Not only is it addicting to look at your progress every day, but you'll actually be excited to see your heart rate go up, how many steps you can get in, how many calories you burn and more. If you're looking for a cheaper option, we're big fans of the Amazfit Band 5 Fitness Tracker ($34.88).

Start Out Slow

The reason a lot of people get burnt out at the beginning of the year after setting lofty fitness goals is that they went too hard, too fast. Instead, we recommend taking it nice and easy. Start out slow! Take a walk for just 15 minutes a day. Do a 30-minute online pilates class. Go to the gym and climb the Stairmaster for 20 minutes. Whatever it is that seems like just enough to be uncomfortable, but not too much to leave you with anxiety, is probably the sweet spot.

Move Your Body Every Day

It's vital to move your body every day in one way or another. Why? That way, you can build up a habit! Whether it's doing 100 sit-ups when you wake up, jumping rope for two minutes or holding a plank for as long as you can before you go to bed, moving your body in some way is a great start to your fitness journey. And as the days and weeks go by, feel free to take things up a notch! Make it a goal to hit 10,000 steps every day or even walk one mile a day.

Try Out Different Workouts

For a lot of us, working out seems like such a chore. And when we see people on social media get excited about their daily pilates class or run, some of us tend to scratch our heads. But you know what? Those people have it figured out. They found an activity that brings them joy, and that's exactly what you need to do. Whether it's tennis, going on walks outside, HIIT, spinning, weight training, dancing or something else, there are tons of workouts for you to try. Eventually, the hope is that you'll find something (or even somethings) you fall in love with!

Buy Cute Workout Clothes

We don't know about you, but we feel better when we look better. If you treat yourself to some cute workout clothes, trust us when we say you're going to want to show them off to the masses. We're into all sorts of athleisure brands, and with so many adorable options to choose from, you might have a rough time narrowing down your options! We believe in quality over quantity here at Sweety High, so do some research on the pieces you're considering buying to see if they're worth it. Personally, we'd rather have one amazing set from Alo than four crummy ones from the clearance rack.

A Healthy Diet Is Key

The only way you're ever going to see results with your fitness game is by also incorporating a healthy diet into your life. Some people will work out every single day but eat like crap and wonder why they're not seeing any improvements. And no, we're not saying to only eat salads for the rest of your life. By all means, eat what you want, but do it in a way that feels right to you. Instead of going to the fast food line, make yourself a healthy bowl at home. Instead of getting a soda, opt for an iced tea. There are so many small changes you can make that are truly easy to do!
