How to Use an At-Home Facial Steamer

At-home facial steamers are something we think everyone should invest in.

And while it might sound fancy, you can actually get your hands on certain models for under $30. The one we've been using religiously is the Ionic Facial Steamer from Plum Beauty, and it has totally upped our skincare routine and even recovery time when we get head colds. Continue below for our step-by-step guide on how to use a facial steamer!

1. Cleanse Face and Remove Makeup

The whole point of steaming your face is to open up your pores so that you can deeply cleanse your skin, so make sure you pre-cleanse! Especially if you're wearing makeup, this is not a step you can afford to skip. Use your go-to facial cleanser and make sure all makeup and dirt are removed.

2. Fill the Tank With Water

Steam doesn't just happen on its own—it requires water! Read the directions for your specific facial steamer, but most have some sort of tank that you're supposed to fill up with water. Also, chug a glass of water before you steam!

3. Turn On Device and Steam Face

Once your face is cleansed and water is in the tank, it's on to actually get your steam on. Turn it on (and allow it to heat up) and place the facial steamer about five inches away from your face. Then let it do its magic! We suggest steaming for up to six minutes, but if you want to go a little below or above, that's fine, too. You can even place a towel over your head—this will really feel like you're at the spa!

4. Unplug and Discard Leftover Water

Once you're done steaming, unplug your device and discard the leftover water. It's very important to make sure there's no water left inside because it can fester and lead to mold—which is the literal last thing you want to steam your face with.

5. Finish Off With Skincare

Last but not least, finish off your facial steaming sesh with some skincare. Now that your pores are opened up and thoroughly cleansed, your skin will be able to better absorb your skincare products. We suggest going in with a facial mask (if you have time) and finishing off with a serum and moisturizer.
