How Hunter Daily Opened Up and Admitted to Her True Feelings on New Single ‘Girl Friend’
Hunter Daily's honest and evocative songwriting always demands our attention, and with her first release of 2024, "Girl Friend," it's clear that the singer-songwriter is a star.
The dreamy new track is all about falling for a friend and developing a secret girl crush, with a lush, acoustic guitar-driven sound that's simply irresistible. It also perfectly encapsulates the vulnerability of finally letting yourself feel what's been bubbling up inside of you, making it powerfully relatable no matter who you are. For us, it was love at first listen, and we had the pleasure of catching up with Hunter to discover the story behind its creation and precisely what it means to her.
The Story Behind 'Girl Friend'
Hunter Daily: "Girl Friend" is an amalgamation of a bunch of different girls I've encountered throughout the years, but the week that I wrote it I did have one girl on my mind in particular. She had just been popping up on my social media a lot and I had been running into her at parties and couldn't get her out of my head! She was just so magnetic and I wanted to dive a little deeper into my infatuation.

What 'Girl Friend' Means
HD: The song really helped me process my own sexuality. At first, I felt nervous about sharing it with the world, but the more I listened to the song, the more I felt proud and excited about the idea of singing it in front of a crowd. I love women and I love being a woman and I think this song really celebrates that.

Hunter's Favorite Lyric
HD: I have a couple of favorite lyrics, but what immediately pops into my head is the very last part of the song, which I think really sums up the song as a whole. It's: "She walks in a room like I wish I could. How does she do it? Do I want to be her? Do I want to be with her? It's confusing." This actually wasn't in the original bounce and I had to really advocate to put it in there. It just was one last feeling that I had to include before the song could end.
On Kicking Off 2024
HD: I've been sitting on this song for a minute now, so I'm dying to put it out! A lot of the songs on my last record were a little more slow, somber. Now, I'm excited to release a song that's more up-tempo! It just seems like a perfect, energetic way to start the new year!

HD: Well, I might be going on tour with someone very soon… but you'll have to wait and see who it is!
Final Thoughts
HD: With "Girl Friend," I feel like I'm really coming into my own. The writing process was an opportunity to get to know myself more deeply, and now that it's out, I'm proud and excited to share this part of me! I hope that it's a song that makes other people excited to be themselves, too.
