HunterGirl Dishes on ‘the Song That Kept [Her] in Nashville,’ ‘Ain’t About You’

Fans around the world fell in love with country singer-songwriter HunterGirl during her time on American Idol, and the tale behind her new single, "Ain't About You," makes her story even more incredible.

The swelling acoustic ballad is destined to be a tear-jerker as she sings about being compelled not to give up and realizing she's making music for a greater purpose. It's an inspiring anthem for anyone seeking their true calling, made even more powerful by the circumstances under which she wrote it. HunterGirl originally penned the track as she considered giving up on her musical journey, but only weeks after its composition, she auditioned for American Idol, eventually coming in second place and signing her record deal. From the moment we started listening, we knew it was something special, and we had the pleasure of catching up with HunterGirl to learn all about the song, and what it means to her today.

The Story Behind 'Aint About You'

HunterGirl: I wrote this song completely by myself about two years ago. I was at a point in my musical journey where it seemed like nothing was really working for me while all of my friends were getting deals, and I was wondering if I was on the right path. I call it my 45-minute conversation with Jesus, and it's just raw, honest and vulnerable. This is the song that kept me in Nashville, and little did I know that a week later, I would end up auditioning for American Idol and everything would change.

What 'Ain't About You' Means

HunterGirl: This song means everything to me. Two years ago, I never thought my life would look like this, but thanks to my fans, everything has changed. I can't wait for my fans to hear it, and I hope it brings them encouragement to continue chasing their dreams.

HunterGirl's Favorite Lyric

HunterGirl: I feel like all the lyrics I connect to pretty heavily. When I first started writing it, I was thinking about all the little girls and boys out there that need to hear a song like this. But where I feel like it really connected was in the third chorus, where it was about me. "What if there is a heart that needs some hope and finds it in the words that you almost never wrote?" I think Jesus did that one!

On the Transformation of the Track

HunterGirl: I think when I first wrote this song, I was in one of the hardest times of my life. Like I mentioned earlier, everything has changed for me. I have amazing fans, and just getting to see my fans every night while I'm going through struggles means the world. I know I have so many people to lean on.
