How Jax’s ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ Is a Tale of Heartbreak, Learning and Finding Joy
It's not every day that a song about ex-boyfriends is as joyous and upbeat as "To All the Boys I've Loved Before"—but Jax isn't your average singer-songwriter.
The TikTok sensation has more than 8 million followers, and when you hear her witty, colorful and ridiculously catchy tracks, it's no surprise that they never fail to go totally viral. "To All the Boys I've Loved Before," out today, is her latest release, and it has all of the makings of a huge hit song. We got the chance to check out the song and its music video early and ask Jax all of our most burning questions about it. Keep reading to see what she had to say.
Sweety High: What was the songwriting process of "To All the Boys I've Loved Before"?
Jax: I wanted to write a love song about how some of my past toxic relationships taught me how to be in a healthy one! Since I'm in a better place now, it was easy to giggle a little throughout the writing process.
SH: Do you feel like it was cathartic to write this track, and are all of the little stories you tell in the song true?
Jax: All the stories are true and it was definitely therapy to be able to write about heartbreak with a smile on my face. It's always a good feeling when you can look back and think, "Hmm—I'm actually glad that happened because I wouldn't be here if it didn't." It was really cool to be able to craft a love story out of a bunch of crappy stories from my past.

SH: What's your favorite lyric from the song? Why?
Jax: "I kissed a lot of frogs to get to the prince." It's my sad truth in fairytale language!
SH: What was the inspiration behind the game show theme of the music video?
Jax: I really liked the '50s energy of an old school game show because the chords of the song feel '50s!
SH: Do you have a favorite memory from the shoot?
Jax: The air conditioning broke on set in the middle of a heat wave in Miami, so I kept sticking my head in a freezer to keep my makeup on!
SH: What's the biggest life lesson you learned from your own heartbreaks?
Jax: The biggest lesson I learned was that everything is a lesson and that there's an opportunity to learn from every heartbreak even if it sucks in the moment.

SH: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Jax: Major apologies to my ancient ex-boyfriends for throwing shade!
