Joe Alwyn’s Cactus Instagram Post Wasn’t as Romantic as We Thought
(Operation Finale via Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer)
For all that Joe Alwyn seems to be a great boyfriend to Taylor Swift, not everything he does is romantic.
The actor recently responded to speculation that his Instagram post showing a cactus was a "nod" to Taylor Swift (she had posted a photo of herself in the same location).
However, it turns out that wasn't his intent. He indicated to British GQ that he wasn't trying to send a special message.
When Joe and Taylor each took a photo by a cactus and posted it separately, fans noticed. Her post shared her excitement about kicking off her Reputation tour, and his was captioned with a simple cactus emoji.
Nonetheless, some stans saw his post as a show of support.
While Joe does seem to support Taylor, he wasn't doing it via that particular Instagram post.
"I didn't even think of that until I was in New York and someone else mentioned it," he told British GQ (via ET). "It wasn't purposeful at all!"
That shouldn't come as a huge surprise, to be honest. Joe and Taylor like their privacy, and they do their best to maintain it. He said as much in his interview, telling the magazine, "Someone's private life is by definition private."
Alas, it wasn't the romantic Instagram post their shippers hoped for. Sometimes, a plant is just a plant.
