Kacey Fifield Dishes on the Toxic Relationships That Inspired Her New Single, ‘Camouflage’
16-year-old actress and singer Kacey Fifield has hit it out of the park again with her new single "Camouflage."
It's a soulful, empowering ballad about learning to see through the fakeness in a toxic relationship and learning to move on—something we can all learn a little bit from. It's a wonderful track, and we got the chance to chat with Kacey to find out exactly how to came to be.
Sweety High: What was the songwriting process behind "Camouflage"?
Kacey Fifield: The song's idea originally came from a poem I came up with in middle school. I came across the old note on my phone when sifting through archives and instantly knew I wanted to write a song with the same idea! I didn't use any of the original lines but instead built upon the core theme of a trusted individual putting up a facade with the help of Robbie Rosen.
SH: Did the melody or the idea come first? How do you think the sound of the song supports its themes?
KF: "Camouflage" is a pop ballad, so the music helps guide and emphasize the lyrics. It also slows down for the bridge, allowing that part to be a more vulnerable moment before jumping back into the powerful and passionate chorus.

SH: Was it inspired by a real relationship?
KF: It was inspired by multiple friendships I've had in my past where I've ignored red flags and trusted the wrong people.
SH: Do you have any advice to help people see through the camouflage that people put up in their relationships?
KF: My best advice is to pay attention to red flags and make sure that you're careful with who you trust! There are some incredible, trustworthy people out there that you should surround yourself with, but make sure to avoid those without pure intentions.
SH: What's your favorite lyric from the track?
KF: The chorus lyrics "But you wear that camouflage / swear I'll never be lettin' down my guard" perfectly capture how it feels to be betrayed and decide to put up your guard indefinitely afterward. It's a feeling of distrust and anger that is a direct result of a betrayal by someone you trusted.
SH: What artist have you had on repeat lately?
KF: Conan Gray! I love his song "Overdrive" so much. It gives awesome summer vibes.

SH: Is there anything else you want people to know about the song?
KF: Just that I'm super excited for everyone to listen to it.
