Kayla DiVenere Shares the Story Behind New Self-Love Anthem ‘Date Myself’

There are few artists we've been watching as closely in 2023 as 19-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Kayla DiVenere.

We first fell in love with the alt-pop star's voice thanks to her feature on viisi's  dreamy "one day," but she's truly outdone herself with her latest single, "Date Myself." The jangly pop track is upbeat and uplifting as Kayla confronts the disappointments that seem to come hand-in-hand with dating in the modern age, while also coming to a realization of how powerful it can be to learn to love the time you spend on your own. It's as sweet and relatable as it is catchy, acting as a reminder not to lower our standards for anyone, and we haven't taken it off repeat since its release last week. We adored it from the first listen, and were honored to get the chance to chat with Kayla to learn all about what it means to her.

The Story Behind 'Date Myself'

Kayla DiVenere: "I kinda wanna date myself" blurted out of my mouth while ranting to my mom about all the horrible dates I've been on. I knew from the moment I said it out loud that it could be turned into an anthem for everyone going through the endless treacherous dating cycle of constantly being let down.

What 'Date Myself' Means

KD: Writing "Date Myself" reminded me of how beautiful it is to spend time by yourself and how important it is to be comfortable owning your self-love and high standards. Being able to hear it back after writing it and to scream it at the top of my lungs has comforted me more than any guy has, and I hope it can comfort people, too, in any way they can relate to it.

Kayla's Favorite Lyric

KD: This is the very obvious answer, but my favorite lyric is, "I kinda wanna date myself." It's so simple, yet really embodies so much self-love.
