KFC Has Vegetarian Fried Chicken in the Works, But It’s ‘Top Secret’

We're going to go out on a limb here and say that most vegetarians don't go to KFC expecting a lot of meatless options.

Fast food restaurants tend not to be overly vegetarian-friendly, least of all ones with meat right in the name. However, we may all need to change our expectations now that KFC has vegetarian fried chicken in the works.

The chain is working on meat-free menu items for U.K. locations, but it's all very hush-hush. KFC told Foodbeast in a statement that "development of the recipe is still in its very early stages," and highlighted that it's "still top secret."

The company is targeting 2019 for the launch of the vegetarian fried chicken, so it plans to do customer testing before the end of the year.

Assuming all goes smoothly and the item is a hit, KFC restaurants in different parts of the globe could also begin selling it, Foodbeast reports. Colonel Sanders would be so proud.

Although the news seems to benefit vegetarians, feeding them isn't KFC U.K.'s only goal. The restaurant is actively looking to offer lower calorie menu items, hence plans for introducing a meat alternative. Whatever the reasoning, though, non-meat-eaters can't argue with more options.
