Leanna Firestone Dishes on the Playful Western-Inspired Music Video for ‘Keeping Score’
Leanna Firestone's "Keeping Score" has been firmly stuck in our heads since it dropped last month, and it just got even more unforgettable with the release of its playful new music video.
The energetic revenge-pop track tells a tale of the push and pull between wanting to get even with a ex and simply wanting to be with them. It was inspired by Leanna's favorite classic country songs, and appropriately, the video comes to life as a country western duel, complete with an old west setting and some truly iconic cowgirl ensembles. We had the pleasure of catching up with Leanna to get the inside scoop on the song and its video. Watch it and read our full interview with her below.
The Story Behind 'Keeping Score'
Leanna Firestone: "Keeping Score" is one of very few songs in my discography that is not based on a true story. I was just so inspired by all the country songs I grew up listening to about women murdering their husbands that I decided to write something in that vein!

What 'Keeping Score' Means
LF: This song (like very few of songs in my discography) is just supposed to be fun! There is not a lot of deeper meaning to it and I hope the take away for listeners is that they bobbed their heads while listening to it.

Leanna's Favorite Lyric
LF: The very first lyric of the song "I might kill you with the hatchet that you want me to bury" was one that I had sat on for a long time. I loved it so much that the whole premise of the song is based on it!
On the Music Video
LF: I grew up watching Spy vs. Spy and this music video is supposed to be that, mixed with an old western, mixed with the vaguely lesbian scene of Sue Sylvester marrying herself on Glee. I brought it to life by pretending to experience self-love for the first time!
My favorite memory from the music video shoot is seeing everyone in their western costumes for the first time! We had only had the day off to film it during tour, so we had some friends go shopping for us before we got there (shoutout to Meg, Julian, Sophie and Catie), and had no idea what they were going to dress us like/how it was all going to come together. Seeing everyone in their boots and hats was a real Tennessee Dream.

What's Next
LF: I will be writing, writing, writing. You can expect me posting a 30 second snippet of a song I just wrote and trying to gauge audience reaction to figure out if it's worth finishing.
Final Thoughts
LF: "Keeping Score" is one of the only songs that I have ever made that I will listen to in my free time, even now that it's released. Normally at the point of a song coming out, you've worked on it so much and heard it so frequently in the process of making and promoting it that you can't listen to it anymore and that just… never happened with this song. I think it's so fun and I have yet to get sick of it. I hope the same is true for you!
