Legacybox Will Digitize Your Old Family Photos and Videos
Looking through old photos and videos with my family typically ends in lots of laughter and story-telling.
At 26 years of age, I've created quite a few memories with my parents and siblings. Dating all the way back to the year of my birth in 1994, my dad started videotaping his sweet baby girl. And no, it wasn't a tiny little camera, it was huge and had to rest on his shoulder. The '90s were quite the time to be alive! Since I obviously don't have any recollection of my early days, first holidays and the like, being able to watch them unfold on video is something I've come to appreciate. However, since most of the technology from back then, and even 10 years ago, differs from today, it's not exactly easy to watch old home movies.
Enter Legacybox. Legacybox is a company that digitizes your old family movies and pictures so you can access them much easier. Instead of searching for an old VHS or cassette player, Legacybox acts as the middleman and takes all the struggle out of it. When they reached out to me and asked if I'd like to review their product, I jumped at the chance. Keep reading to find out my honest thoughts on Legacybox:
The Service
A Legacybox varies from person to person because it contains your own home videos and pictures. Once you've chosen your package size, they send over a box with instructions, barcodes and a shipping label to send back. Once you fill it with your own products, you ship it off and wait for them to digitize it. Shortly after, you'll receive an email with a Dropbox containing all your videos and photos! Plus, you'll get the original forms back, too.
Since Legacybox isn't so much a product as it is a service, it may seem confusing, but trust me when I say it was the easiest process ever. In fact, the hardest part was choosing which items I wanted to digitize because I had way too many options.
The Experience
Once you decide to go with Legacybox, you place your order online for them to digitize 2, 10, 20 or 40 items. For example, if you were to choose the two-item box, you could do a video tape and a set of 25 pictures (which counts as one item).
Since they reached out to me, I didn't have a say in how many items I wanted digitized, but they were very generous and gave me the 20 item package, priced at $510. I went over to my parents' house and started to dig for old videos. I decided not to do any photos because we probably have thousands of them stored away, so it just didn't seem worth it to me. Photos are much easier to digitize, so I figured I'd let the pros work on my old videos.
By the time I had all my videos rounded up, my Legacybox came in the mail. They sent me a large box containing instructions, barcodes and a shipping label to send back to them. I placed all my items in the box that I had no way of converting myself, added barcodes to each item and shipped them back off to their headquarters.
From there, it took a few short weeks for them to digitize everything. They kept me up-to-date on where they were in the process by emailing me at every step. They sent an email when they received the package I sent and when their experts were working on digitizing them. The next email contained the link to a Dropbox folder with all my newly digitized videos. I went with the digital download option, but I also could have gone with a thumb drive or disc set.
There were hours and hours of film to watch, and I must have watched a good quarter of it my first day! I was obsessed and couldn't put my phone down. Some of the videos I was surprised to see were my parents' wedding, my birth, more birthdays, holidays and more. I either hadn't seen the footage in years or had never seen it, depending on the form of the video (VHS, Super 8, etc.).
Bottom Line
Without Legacybox, I never would've been able to watch my parents' wedding. I wouldn't have the ability to pull up a funny home video from the late '90s and show it with my siblings. They were able to give me back some of the most precious memories I didn't even know I'd lost along the way.
I've recommended this service to countless friends and could not speak more highly of it. While it's definitely on the pricier side, I think it's completely worth it. After all, you can't put a price on happiness!
