Little Things You Can Do to Up Your Skincare Routine

These days, it seems like everyone has some sort of 17-step skincare ritual that they do each morning and night. However, if you're here reading this, we'd bet that you're exhausted just thinking about having a routine that includes that many steps and potentially pricey ingredients.

But following a solid skincare routine doesn't need to be difficult, as there are actually some ultra-easy little things you can do to up your routine without putting in too much effort—or breaking the bank in the process.  Without further ado, let's talk about the lazy girl's guide to improving her skincare routine:

Know Which Ingredients Are Worth the Effort

To put it simply, your skin does not require the same ingredients to stay healthy when you're 15 as it does when you're 50. Yes, prevention is key to healthy skin over time, but that doesn't mean you need to be packing on tons of products that are actually just a waste of your time and money. When you're as young as you are now, you can probably stick to the basics without worrying too much about the latest trending skincare ingredients. Unless you have a dermatologist or other professional that recommends otherwise, you're likely set for now with products like a vitamin C serum, moisturizer, sunscreen and a solid cleanser.

Stick to a Few Key Steps

Speaking of not worrying about a densely packed list of products, you can also limit your entire routine down to just a few fairly simple steps. We're talking a routine as easy as washing your face in the morning and at night (make sure you get all your makeup off if you wear any), applying some sort of serum like a vitamin C, moisturizing and making sure you wear SPF during the day. That alone can make a huge difference in your skin's clarity and brightness, and isn't that the entire goal of having a skincare routine in the first place? If you don't know where to start, choose a good brand that you like and go with a few of their products to simplify things even further. We'd suggest a clean beauty brand like JunkTheory or a medical-grade brand like Biophora, but go with whichever one suits your lifestyle and skin type the best.

Buy a (Cheap) Gua Sha

There's one step we want you to add to your simple skincare routine, and that's using a gua sha. If you're not already familiar with these devices, they're small, flat pieces of stone or plastic that you drag across your face in specific ways to stimulate blood flow and drain your lymph nodes. It sounds weird, we know, but the practice has actually been around for centuries and has only recently become popularized in the western world for its many health and skincare benefits. Although it may sound like you need to be some sort of pro to use one properly, it really is an easy, quick thing you can do to up your skincare routine since you can literally do it while washing your face. Water and soap also help the gua sha glide gently across your skin instead of pulling at it, which is not what you want.

Wear Makeup That Acts Like Skincare (or Vice-Versa)

If you're someone who wears makeup on the regular, there's an easy way to level up your skincare routine right in front of you: Make the switch to double-duty makeup products that contain skincare ingredients. You don't have to give up your favorite eyeliner or swap out everything in your beloved bag, but switching to a foundation or concealer that's actually good for your skin can make a huge difference in your complexion and overall skin health. Brands like Oxygenetix make products designed with this exact mission in mind, including an innovative breathable foundation that's also available in an acne control version for some extra skin-healing power.

Avoid Being Over-Influenced

The "deinfluencing" trend of 2023 has to be one of our favorites, especially thanks to how it's made us rethink why we buy what we buy. It can be easier to succumb to influencing than you realize, even if you go out of your way to avoid following any actual influencers online. Don't let yourself believe that just because you saw a post about some game-changing product, it must be as incredible and worth your money as it sounds. Advertisers pay a ton to reach people, but doing your own research on whether or not this product will actually work for you can make all the difference.

Choose Products That Serve Multiple Purposes

Why clutter up your cabinets with tons of single-ingredient products (that you probably don't need to be using anyway) when you can save yourself the effort by using some all-in-one, equally effective time savers? There are so many skincare products out there designed just for lazy girls, and they still offer all the same benefits (if not more) as the overpriced ones that you have to apply one by one.
